“Extend over it, my guarding claw.”

Art:Ognis, the Dragon's Lash by Andreas Zafiratos

Ognis, The Dragons Lash is a card that in my opinion got forgot a lot because of all of the pre-cons that come out these days, even though many don’t like or play her I find Ognis to be a super strong and really fun take on both treasure and Jund! This deck is a different approach to an overall pretty aggressive archetype that is everywhere in EDH. Make a ton of mana and be the green deck you always wanted to be as well as the aggressiveness from red and the interaction / awesome spells and creatures from black! This deck is really something special, without further adieu lets get it!

Why Ognis, The Dragon’s Lash?

We are built around Ognis fully and she is a key card in the deck, she is one of our best mana producers. We almost never attack with Ognis and want to keep her as protected and safe from harm as we can! We can ramp into her early and another strong part is her mana cost which gives us flexibility in what types of starting hands we can keep!

5 Helpful Upgrades:

These are in no particular order but these are cards that I think would improve the deck greatly but were removed due to price!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

Most of the creatures in our deck are just haste outlets but we do have some absolute bombs in our creature package. One of my favorites is Wulfgar of Icewind Dale which is a crazy card that gives us double triggers on Ognis’s trigger which can be a crazy way to double our mana! We also have Old Gnawbone who also produces an absolute ton of treasures. Samut, Vizier of Naktamun not only has haste but is a card draw machine for our other creatures with haste! Since we have a decent amount of small but hasty creatures we can use Ohran Frostfang to help make our smaller creatures much more threatening! Cavern-Hoard Dragon is a really strong card that we can cast super early once we get some treasures going!

Instants:

Unexpected Windfall and Big Score are great draw spells that also make treasure tokens, these cards are both really strong ways to keep a turn going after we have a bunch of treasure tokens. Beast Within and Terminate are both cheap and really strong pieces of removal! Second Harvest is another really cool card that can help us effectively our treasure tokens!

Sorceries:

Since we have an absolute ton of mana from our treasures we can afford to use a ton of it on some huge X spells like Genesis Wave and Crackle with Power which can be super huge and super crazy X spells when these come down. Brass's Bounty is an expensive “ramp” spell but since we can use treasures to cast it it can be very strong! Our sorcery package is also where a lot of our traditional ramp lies with cards like Cultivate, Kodama's Reach and Skyshroud Claim!

Artifacts:

Mana rocks make up nearly all of our artifact package with both on-color talismans, Arcane Signet and Golgari Signet as strong ways to get some early or just some extra mana! Besides that we have Dolmen Gate which is a great way to trigger Ognis and protect our creatures. Bootleggers' Stash is not just a strong card but a great combo card as well!

Enchantments:

We have a bunch of enchantments that are part of combos or are main combos like Aggravated Assault and Revel in Riches these cards have some practicality without comboing but we typically hold them until then! Mirror March is a fun and chaotic enchantment albeit a little expensive this card can be really strong with some luck and good creatures! Stimulus Package is a really good way to turn some of our treasure tokens into creatures perfect for combat! There and Back Again is a cool saga which we mostly want “Smaug” out of it, 14 treasures is a huge boost for us! Rain of Riches is a sweet card that features one of magic’s most broken mechanics in cascade!

Land Base:

Our land base has a bunch of ways to produce all 3 of our colors! While being budget we lose access to some key fetch and dual lands there are so many really strong alternatives like Cinder Glade, Dragonskull Summit and Llanowar Wastes which are all a little bit slower than there more expensive counterparts but absolutely get the job done! Mines of Moria is another really cool land that lets us make more treasure tokens! Not too much to say about any of the other lands in the deck just RGB producing lands!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • An absolute ton of mana production
  • A lot of ramp in addition to our mana production
  • Can be aggressive and strong early

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to spellslinger / combo strategies
  • Not a ton of interaction
  • Weak to control strategies

Conclusion:

Ognis, The Dragon’s Lash is a really cool precon commander who doesn’t get enough love as they should! Being able to produce a ton of mana in treasure is a high level of ramp that even green thinks is good! We have so many strong ways to produce an absolute ton of mana and we also have a ton of combos and payoffs! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of the support!
