Tuesday Night Takeover

Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator Spellpile Brewed CEDH

“Rise if you would. For that is our curse.”

Art:Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator by Daarken

Vohar is not the most common commander in CEDH, which in all honesty is a little shocking because double casting a spell and “looting” are two very powerful effects more cards and more spells are never really a bad thing. We are a Thoracle in any way kind of deck as much as possible backed up by artifact mana a ton of tutors and counters and we have a winning recipe, it is not uncommon to find ourselves in a counter war and this is something we can typically win. Without further adieu lets get it!

Why Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator?

We chose Vohar for two reasons, being able to “loot” is honestly just a sweet and efficient effect and we will never say no to more cards! Vohar’s second ability is awesome as well since we can double cast a spell, while we can use this for value we often use this to double cast a game-ender like Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact as an extra piece of protection against counters! Vohar can also come down super early from our artifact ramp and is just overall a great leader for our deck!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! For explanations of the combos please refer to the “Main Win Conditions” section below!

Creatures:

We have a very small creature package but the creatures we do have are very impactful, for starters we have our combo creatures in Thassa's Oracle and Laboratory Maniac, not much to say here both used in our combos! Gilded Drake is a decent card and a great way to steal an opponents key creature! We do have two hate creatures in Opposition Agent and Orcish Bowmasters which are both great ways to punish two very common things in CEDH! Spellseeker typically grabs Tainted Pact but this is always situational, we also have Dauthi Voidwalker which not only shuts down a decent amount of strategies but helps a ton with casting more cards for free!

Planeswalkers:

We only have one planeswalker in Jace, Wielder of Mysteries who is a great game-ender / alternate win-con for the deck, this is often a card we will hold until we are ready to win! If we do have the need to play it early we get a decent amount of value with his plus and I have never even gotten close to his ult. Vohar’s second ability interacts really well with Jace!

Instants:

We are a Thoracle deck and because of that we need an absolute ton of counterspells, some of the best include Force of Will, Mental Misstep and Fierce Guardianship we have enough counterspells that we can easily win counterwars, granted this is not a guaranteed thing that will happen every time but we are well positioned to do so! We have a pretty low overall mana cost cards like Ad Nauseam and we can cycle through the deck to find our combos! Since Vohar has such an impact on how we play and we want them out as soon as possible Fierce Guardianship and Deadly Rollick are pretty much online a good majority of games and free spells are really never bad!

Sorceries:

We have to find our combos so we have an absolute ton of tutors, Demonic Tutor, Grim Tutor, Imperial Seal, we also have Praetor's Grasp which is a great way to steal an opponents key card or combo piece! We are super light on creatures so a card like Toxic Deluge is a great card to use at really any stage of the game and especially against the Winota’s and Yisan’s of the format! One of my favorite cards is Beseech the Mirror which is a great way to grab a key spell!

Artifacts:

We have an absolute ton of mana rocks in our artifact package, almost all of these are what you would expect, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault and Mox Diamond just to name a few! The most important thing to us is to be really fast and our artifact package also allows us to play less lands and offset some of our mana! Since we have so many tutors we can often use Wishclaw Talisman to grab whatever piece of the combo that we dont have! We also absolutely had to include The One Ring as a great piece of card draw and protection, combined with our mana ramp we can easily cast this super early!

Enchantments:

We are a blue deck in CEDH so we absolutely have to have Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora which are both card draw machines! The only other enchantment is Necropotence which is a really good way to cycle through the deck and find a combo piece!

Land Base:

Our land base is what you would expect, we get our fast mana from cards like City of Traitors and Ancient Tomb, besides that our land base is filled to the brim with Dimir duals and fetch lands, the most important thing is lands that come untapped so cards like Forbidden Orchard and Exotic Orchard are perfect for the deck!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Vohar allows us to draw and double-cast spells
  • A ton of card draw / countermagic
  • A ton of artifact mana

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Can be but not always as fast as the fastest deck in the format
  • Weak against Stax Strategies
  • Weak to creature based / Winota decks if we dont have a fast game

Conclusion:

Vohar is a really sweet commander who is the complete package not only can they come in really early and “loot” a ton, we also can double cast spells which can be really strong when we are attempting to combo off! This deck is fast and efficient this can be an early turn deck and it really depends on our hand! Vohar is a semi-uncommon choice at many CEDH tables but they are very strong and a ton of fun to play! Hope you enjoyed this article! Thanks for reading to the end!
