Budget Upgrades for the Eternal Might Precon from Aetherdrift (All under $10!)

“Was seven strong, now I’m dead and gone”

Art:Temmet, Naktamun's Will by Douglas Shuler

Eternal Might is a really strong commander precon. This is one of the best ones that we played straight out of the box, while it is quite good, we absolutely need some upgrades, and luckily these upgrades don’t need to break the bank, all of these cards are under ten dollars, and can improve this deck quite a bit, while I have been a long time fan of The Scarab God Temmet truly feels like the best current option for Zombies and I think this card is really going to change the archetype quite a bit, For some good old undead Esper fun! Without further ado, let’s get it!

Below are all of the changes we have made!

Add: Drop:

With how cheap it is, I’m kind of shocked that Rooftop Storm isn’t already included within this deck, we have so many zombies in this deck, and all of them being free really helps with the overall gameplan, and being able to vomit out our hand is really strong. The main reason I chose God-Pharaoh's Gift as a replacement piece is that it is quite expensive and doesn’t do a ton for the deck, I can see its appeal, but for seven mana, you don’t get a whole lot.

Rooftop Storm is quite cheap, coming in at around 0.50 to 1.00

Add: Drop:

While it is a little more expensive in mana cost, I think that Wilhelm overall is just a better zombie producer for the deck, and it’s really nice not to have to rely on our opponents to get some additional token production. I don’t think Wizened Mentor is a great choice for this deck, and in testing, Wilhelm performed far better than Wizened Mentor.

Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver is a little pricey, coming in at 7-10 dollars.

Add: Drop:

Varina is absolutely crazy in this deck, their ability allows us to draw and discard a ton, and with Temmet on the field, we can increase our damage a crazy amount, this is a true finisher for the deck, and even with a pretty small board consisting of only three or four creatures being able to give zombies +3/+3 or +4/+4 is extremely strong and can help us end games quickly. Angel of Sanctions is a cool card but is an expensive Oblivion Ring style effect and doesn’t assist the overall game plan very much.

Varina, Lich Queen is a little pricey, with most copies ranging from 8 to 10 dollars.

Add: Drop:

Eternalize is a great mechanic, but truthfully, after testing out the base version of this precon, I found the eternalize cards were not all that great for the deck, and just having zombies normally without any extra steps allows us to execute the game plan much faster. Diregraf Colossus is really powerful, and while it’s not always super huge, it’s a great token producer for the deck and can help us go super wide; Diregraf requires very little mana investment and gets better, and better the longer it is allowed to stick around!

Diregraf Colossus copies are around 3 to 5 dollars, depending on which version we get.

Add: Drop:

I’m quite shocked that Gray Merchant was not included in the precon. It’s not a particularly expensive car,d but it is a zombie, and it is extremely strong. We are already heavily skewed towards black, so Gray Merchant’s ability can flip the game and cause havoc for your opponents. Twisted Abomination is cool, but I am not a huge fan of it in this deck; in my opinion, Gray Merchant is just the better option and has way more effect than a six-mana card. We would just swampcycle.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel copies are cheap and range from 0.50 to 2.00, depending on what set/treatment you get.

Add: Drop:

Another card that I’m shocked they didn’t just put in here by default, Noxious Ghoul is really strong and can absolutely devastate creature-focused strategies, in the mid-late game we can easily drop two to three zombies during our turn so being able to take out nearly an opponent board every time we can untap puts an immense amount of pressure on them. I decided to cut Binding Mummy because what’s the point of tapping down creatures when we could just remove them?

Noxious Ghoul copies range from 2 to 3 dollars.

Add: Drop:

Combat is absolutely our strong suit in this deck, because of that, a card like Dread Summons isn’t great for the overall gameplan, now a card like Akroma’s Will that can easily allow us to one-shot our opponent is perfect for our gameplan, there are definitely games where Dread Summons felt really good, but every time I get Akroma’s Will and since we almost always have our commander,r I think this card is much better.

Akroma's Will copies range from 6 to 8 dollars.

Add: Drop:

Maskwood Nexus is a really good card, but in this deck, we are pretty much running all Zombies anyways so I found the effect to be not as spectacular as it is in other decks because of that I dropped it for Wand of Orcus, Deathtouch on our already strong combat position makes us even harder to deal with, Wand of Orcus allows us to be a nightmare for our opponents.

Wand of Orcus copies range from 8 to 10 dollars.

One Last Change:

I think that 39 lands in this deck is absolutely insane, so I cut the following:

Conclusion:

Thank you so much for reading to the end! This is one of the best precon that has come out in a very long time, Temmet is super cool, and expect a full deck/tech primer and a non-budget upgrade for this deck, since it was spoiled and I was able to test it, this deck is an absolute blast. Zombies have a true baller commander! Stay tuned and TAP IN!
