Sophia, Dogged Detective $50 Budget

Commander Overview

Sophia, Dogged Detective is one of the best commanders for a dog-tribal deck because she not only makes a dog token, but she buffs your pack and creates tokens to do so.

I originally built this deck for a friend who was looking to get back into magic after not having played for many years. He wanted something simple and fun, and with a $50 budget, I think this deck fits the bill. While not as powerful as some of the recent precons, this is a thematic deck that is a solid bracket 2, with a lot of upgrade potential.

How to Play the Deck

The premise of the deck is pretty simple. We play dog creatures, use Sophia and other means to also create tokens, such as foods and clues. When we use Sophia’s ability, we buff all the dogs on our team. The nice thing about Sophia is that her sacrifice ability doesn’t require her to tap. This means if you have the mana and the tokens, you could buff your dogs multiple times in one turn.

Having food and clue tokens also makes it easy to gain life or draw cards, both of which are quite good when trying to establish a board-state of hounds.

Synergies in the deck

A lot of the pieces of the deck benefit from investigation and +1/+1 counters. Mushroom Watchdogs for example, is a sac outlet for foods, buffing himself and granting vigilance. Similarly, District Mascot lets you remove counters to destroy artifacts, so the utility is definitely there.

Phases of the Game

Early-Game: We have a bunch of 1 and 2-drop dogs to play on turn 1 or 2, and then of course mana rocks to help mana fix for Sophia.

Mid-Game: Establish value pieces with Primal Vigor or Bred for the Hunt to make our dogs more formidable.

Late-Game: With a large enough board, you can end the game with Overwhelming Stampede.

Card Breakdowns

Ramp

Because most of our spells are fairly cheap, we don’t need a whole lot of ramp. Farseek and Cultivate are the classics, but I’ve also included Many Partings and Heaped Harvest because of the food token synergies.

Inspiring Statuary is also a solid ramp piece, allowing you to tap clues and foods to pay the generic mana cost for some of your creatures.

Card Draw/Card Advantage

The synergies with clue tokens makes it easy to draw cards for a 2 mana investment. But, there are a few other ways to draw cards.

Distant Melody can draw us a lot of cards in the mid to late game, and Inspiring Call gives us a small burst of cards. Deduce gives as a card and a clue, while enchantments like Bred for the Hunt is a payoff for attacking with creatures with counters on them.

Removal

Path to Exile is for problematic creatures, Heritage Reclaimation gets rid of artifacts or enchantments. Collision Course is the best of both worlds with a mode for creature removal or artifact removal. We also have mass removal with Fumigate and Austere Command.

Witness Protection is a flavorful card in this deck, and can neutralize a problematic combo creature or a commander.

Protection

For having blue, this deck only runs Negate as a counterspell. Unbreakable Formation can be used to protect our dogs from a board wipe like Blasphemous Act.

Utility / Support

The creatures and other cards in the deck are focused around token or +1/+1 synergies. Academy Manufactor is a stand-out card, letting us triple our token output. Primal Vigor can help opponents, but it also greatly helps us, doubling counters and tokens.

Mana Base

Not much of note in the mana base for this deck. There’s a healthy balance of dual lands to help reach the 3 pips we need for Sophia. Sac lands like Tranquil Landscape and Evolving Wilds can find our missing colors, while Night Market has a cycling ability and can tap for any color.

Since we’re running dogs, Animal Sanctuary is also a must include.

Win Conditions

The main way we win is by developing a large board with lots of card and mana advantage. To end the game, playing Overwhelming Stampede will give your team trample and a significant buff. Additionally, Tangletrove Kelp can turn all of our clues into 6/6 plant creatures, which can present a threatening win-condition all on its own.

While not a game ender, Pack Leader makes it very easy to swing our creatures out because he pretty much gives them indestructible.

Strengths of the Deck

Draws cards and buffs creatures quickly

Dogs are cheap to cast, making it easy to have a large board

Weaknesses of the Deck

Weak to board wipes if we’re not prepared

Token and artifact hate shuts down much of our synergies

Deck Upgrades

This is a budget build, so there’s always room for improvements. Here are a few cards I think would work well in this deck:

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a thematic dog kindred deck, Sophia is the way to go. She is such a powerhouse of a card, granting a body, a buff, and tokens. Plus, many of the dog cards also have +1/+1 synergies, so the deck feels cohesive and fun.
