Kratos, Stoic Father // Atreus, Impulsive Son Proliferate Gods

Commander Overview

Kratos and Atreus are two partners who work absolutely perfectly together. They feed off each other very well and both present very strong abilities that give you a tremendous amount of card advantage and make your creatures a lot bigger and turn them into true threats. This deck primarily focuses on getting experience counters and them for big benefits, whether that’s with Kratos and Atreus or using cards like Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas; we are great at generating advantage. Being in Jeskai gives us access to a lot of great proliferation support like Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus and Patrolling Peacemaker, which allow us to snowball our experience counters and +1/+1 counters out of control. This deck focuses primarily on proliferation but also has a subtheme of gods. This deck is a Jeskai powerhouse and perfect for your bracket three table.

How to Play the Deck

Playing the deck is quite simple overall; it doesn’t require a ton of skill, but it does require a good amount of game knowledge and the ability to keep track of things like counters. This deck also has quite a few triggers that happen on any given turn, so for that reason I would not recommend it for a new player, but for a moderate to experienced player, I think this deck is perfect.

Synergy’s in the deck

We have a lot of synergies within the deck, most of them focused on our experience counters that Kratos and Atreus greatly benefit from. We can proliferate all our different types of counters and swing out at our opponents. Being able to get bigger passively gives us a ton of advantage as we head into the late game. Even though we don’t start fast out of the gate, getting passively bigger and better helps us a ton as the game goes on. Our proliferation package is one of the strongest aspects of our deck, and even if we get one counter, we can usually snowball hard from there.

Phases of the Game

Early-Game: Not a ton going on here; like most decks, this is the turn where we establish both of our commanders and get some support pieces like mana rocks out. If we have an early Sol Ring, we do try to get out Kratos so we can start gaining experience counters, but we are A-OK with taking it slow.

Mid-Game: This is another building period for the deck, proliferating as much as we can and getting our creatures as big as we can. At this stage, we should outscale our opponents and become more aggressive. If our opponents are getting out of hand, don’t hesitate to remove their stuff and keep them slow.

Late-Game: The late-game is where we truly shine, we should have an absolute ton of experience counters by this point and be able to dish out a ton of damage, whether that be from Kratos’s second ability or with cards like All will be ONe this is when we should be turning the pressure up to ten on our opponents and start to threaten them hard. Saving some counterspells and protection for our stuff is great at this stage of the game, because once we get scary, opponents will probably want to mess with us.

Card Breakdowns

Ramp

We don’t ramp a lot but have a pretty low overall cost and most importantly have cards we can use and become mana positive from like Astral Cornucopia which only scales bigger and bigger and cards like Bender's Waterskin and Decanter of Endless Water which are mana positive and in the case of waterskin can be used on anyone’s turn, perfect for cards like An Offer You Can't Refuse. Altar of the Pantheon is another mana rock I really like because it provides supplemental mana and gives us life and extra benefits for some of the devotion gods like Thassa, God of the Sea.

Card Draw/Card Advantage

Atreus is by far the biggest piece of card draw in our deck, followed by Katara, Waterbending Master, which both have a similar effect and, most importantly, give us a ton of cards; with one of these or both, we are pretty damn good at keeping our hands full and having access to all of our stuff. Keranos, God of Storms is another great source of card draw for our deck and can output a bit of damage too. We won’t be drawing our deck, but Atreus provides a much-needed hand refill whenever we need it.

Removal

Jeskai allows us to play some premier removal like Erode, Swords to Plowshares, and Stroke of Midnight, we aren’t a control deck. Still, if an opponent has a crazy commander or drops a threat that needs to be addressed immediately, we’re almost always ready to stop it and continue with our game plan. Since we are a slow-roll deck that snowballs quite a bit, we don’t always have to address threats immediately unless they are game-ending, and we typically wait until opponents are a built up more and more reliant on what we are going to take away. While we won’t remove everything our opponents have, we always make sure we can take care of big threats.

Protection

Our protection comes mostly in the form of our counterspells, cards like An Offer You Can't Refuse and Counterspell are great ways to stop opponents from killing our stuff, I especially like Bolt Bend which is a nearly free way to take an opponents removal spell and pointing it towards our opponents commander or their best creature. While we certainly won’t protect every single creature we have, being able to protect Kratos primarily for a low mana investment is very strong and allows the game plan to keep going.

Utility / Support

Let’s highlight some of my favorite cards in the deck! Helm of the Host is one of the best cards in the deck since it allows us to trigger Kratos more and, most importantly, get a ton more experience counters on our stuff, and when we need cards, to draw a lot more. It’s a free way to generate a ton of different counters. We have so many cards that give us free and easy ways to get experience counters, like Katara, Waterbending Master, which can help us gain counters passively and easily; she also provides a nice piece of additional card draw if we draw them in the late game and already have a ton of counters. The same is true for Otharri, Sun's Glory, which can allow us to go very wide and get more experience counters. Lastly, I want to highlight Taunt from the Rampart, an amazingly strong card that can greatly disrupt our opponents who have big boards and force them to kill each other, an extremely strong effect for only five mana. This card is good anytime opponents have big boards, but it’s especially strong in the late game when life totals are already low.

Mana Base

We have an efficient mana base filled with our on-color shocks, fetches, and triomes, allowing us to establish all of our colors easily. We don’t have a ton of interesting non-basics in the deck outside of Karn's Bastion, which is an awesome card for the deck and is an additional source of proliferation and perfect on a turn where we aren’t doing much else.

Win Conditions

Our only win condition in the deck is combat; we don’t have any combos in the deck, but we do have Sage of Hours, which only requires us to have five total experience counters and Kratos on the field, and we can take infinite turns. The only other way we close out games is with cards like All Will Be One, which allows us to pump out non-combat damage. We

Strengths of the Deck

As the game goes on, we get passively stronger even if there’s only one experience counter, since we can proliferate our experience counters and gain a size and card advantage.

Being in Jeskai gives us access to premium removal and counterspells, allowing us to control what resolves and what stays, maintaining aspects of control while still being a creature- and combat-focused deck.

Weaknesses of the Deck

We are a bit slow out of the gate and can get run over by more aggressive decks. Even if we don’t get run over, we can take a lot of damage at this stage of the game.

< p> The deck can still function but will feel a lot flatter if our commanders consistently get hated out of the game.

Deck Testing/Matchups

I tested this deck against three different decks

Game 1: Vs Arwen, Weaver of Hope. Matchup Record: 3-2

A counters vs counters matchup! This is a bit of a flipped matchup since Arwen comes out of the gate a lot faster, but as long as we take out their commander, we can easily flip the game and push it to our side. If we can’t keep Arwen off the field, this is still a bit of a split matchup since it really depends on who snowballs harder, but overall, if we stick to the plan, we shouldn’t have much trouble here.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Herald of Secret Streams, All Will Be One and Resourceful Defense.

Game 2: Vs Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas. Matchup Record: 2-2

A true 50/50 for the deck. If we can keep Kalemne at bay, this is not a bad matchup for our deck, but if they get out of hand and get out of the gate quicker, their commander is extremely scary and can be tough to deal with. Keep their commander off the board if you can, and follow the normal game plan.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Bolt Bend, Crib Swap and Erode.

Game 3: Vs Satsuki, the Living Lore. Matchup Record: 3-1

While Satsuki is a strong deck, they do not snowball as much as we do, and their sagas are a bit too slow, and they can really struggle to deal with us when we get big. They do have some sagas that can really mess up our creatures, and they can get crazy; we are just a lot more efficient at it. Unless you stumble a ton, this is a pretty easy matchup for our deck.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Patrolling Peacemaker, Metastatic Evangel and Vanquish the Horde.

Conclusion

Thanks so much for reading to the end! I hope you all enjoyed this one. Kratos and Atreus are two awesome partner commanders that have been a lot of fun to build and play. Building around proliferation and gods provides a best-of-both-worlds situation that is not only strong but thematic for the deck. If you love drawing a ton of cards and smacking your opponents hard, this is the perfect deck for you.
