Sigil Captain Token Buffs Pauper EDH

“That’s a funny little guy, look at this little fella. Have you seen this? He’s got sunglasses on!”

Art:Sigil Captain by Howard Lyon

Sigil Captain is a really sweet creature who we first saw in Alara Reborn all the way back in 2009! While the old captain hasn’t gotten much love since then, the amazing Pauper EDH format has helped to bring him back and better than ever! Buffing our small guys and making tokens is the name of our game and we can use this to subject our opponents to the overwhelming force of our board! Without further adieu lets get it!

Why Sigil Captain?

The main reason we chose Sigil Captain is how well he interacts with tokens and other small creatures! We can cast Sigil Captain reliably 1-2 turns earlier and start getting 3/3’s nearly every turn! Because of our low mana cost and oodles of creatures that are able to trigger Sigil Captain we can easily make a bigger board and overwhelm our opponents!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! For explanations of the combos please refer to the “Main Win Conditions” section below!

Creatures:

While we do have a ton of 1 drops a lot of them do not do remarkable things and are just cards we can use to trigger Sigil Captain, because of this we will be focusing mostly on toolbox and important cards that make Sigil Captain and the other creatures in our deck better! Spore Frog is a really sweet card since we can use it not only as a blocker if it is a 3/3 but since we can use it to protect us against combat damage for a turn! Symbiotic Beast is a really cool card that is a lot better when it dies and makes 4 3/3’s! Sporemound is another super cool card since we can get a 3/3 every time we play a land! Urban Daggertooth is another cool card that lets us proliferate a ton and buff our whole board!

Our ramp package is highlighted by cards like Elvish Mystic , Avacyn's Pilgrim and Llanowar Elves are all great mana ramp creatures that get even better when we make them 3/3’s! We also have some creatures that have double strike that get much better when they are 3/3’s like Skyhunter Skirmisher and Fencing Ace! Selesnya Evangel is another really cool card that allows us to use some of our exsiting creatures or tokens and turn them into more 3/3’s!

Instants:

Most of our interaction relies within our instant package with sweet cards like Nature's Claim and Radiant's Judgment! Your Temple Is Under Attack is a great way to either draw some cards or make our creatures indestructible! Respite which is a great way to prevent damage and get some life out of the deal! You're Confronted by Robbers is a great piece of token production or can be used to tap down some of your opponents pesky creatures!

Sorceries:

One part of our sorcery package is full of mana ramp in Cultivate, Kodama's Reach and Farseek which who can ever say no to a ramp spell! The rest of our sorcery package focuses on token production with awesome cards like Chatterstorm which we can easily get the storm count pretty high! Triplicate Spirits which is great since we can cast it with convoke and get some more tokens! Battle Screech is another great token spell that allows us to cast it get some tokens and buffs and easily flash it back!

Artifacts:

Our artifact package is pretty much all mana ramp with Moss Diamond, Marble Diamond and Arcane Signet being great early game pieces of ramp and allow us to cast some extra stuff or cast stuff early! Bonder's Ornament is also a mana rock but with the added benefit of being able to draw a card pretty much every turn with it!

Enchantments:

Fists of Ironwood and Cartouche of Solidarity are both really cool cards that not only give a buff to another creature but make tokens on ETB which will almost always trigger Sigil Captain! Shield of the Oversoul is the perfect aura to put on Sigil Captain since we can protect him with the indestructibility and make him more offensive with the flying!

Land Base:

Very typical Selesyna land base for Pauper EDH with the green and white cycling lands like Slippery Karst and Secluded Steppe which are both great ways to draw some cards if we get flooded! Botanical Plaza is another good albeit expensive way to get a card! The only nonbasics we really have focus on us sacrificing or discarding them and drawing cards out of it!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Easy to make tokens and small creatures actual threats in combat
  • Easy to end games through combats
  • Ramp package allows us to cast a bunch of spells a turn

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Deck is weaker without Sigil Captain
  • Not a ton of interaction
  • Not a ton of ways to draw cards

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We are in every way a combat deck who focuses on buffing up our 1/1’s and swings for the fencings, with the decent amount of token production we have we can easily overwhelm the board with our decently sized creatures! While we don’t have a ton of combos we do have one! And it makes infinite tokens and with Sigil Captain on the field we make infinite 3/3’s! We only have one combo but here it is explained:

Ivy Lane Denizen + Barrenton Medic + Presence of Gond

Requires:

All permanents on the battlefield. Presence of Gond attached to Barrenton Medic. Barrenton Medic does not have summoning sickness.

Steps:

  1. Activate Barrenton Medic by tapping it, creating a 1/1 Elf Warrior creature token.
  2. The Elf Warrior enters the battlefield, triggering Ivy Lane Denizen, putting a +1/+1 counter on Barrenton Medic.
  3. Activate Barrenton Medic’s second ability by putting a -1/-1 counter on it, untapping it.
  4. Repeat.

Results:

Infinite creature tokens. Infinite ETB.

Conclusion:

Sigil captain is a really cool commander who really feels like a classic Selesyna commander! Combos and buffs for our small guys is the core of the Selesyna gameplan! This deck is buff heavy and token themed and also a ton of fun to play! Hope you enjoyed don’t forget you can request a commander for PDH, CEDH, EDH and Budget EDH on our twitter or discord thanks for reading to the end!
