Conclave Mentor Counters Pauper EDH

“Be grateful for the breeze and the grass beneath your feet”

Art:Conclave Mentor by Raoul Vitale

Conclave Mentor is a really fun Selesyna commander who is basically a version of Hardened Scales who also has the ability to gain a bunch of life if Conclave Mentor gets killed! Conclave Mentor is the perfect general for a deck that has an absolute ton of ways to buff up our creatures and get those counters! This is an efficient combat deck that aims to do nothing more than to buff them up and turn them sideways! Without Further Adieu Lets Go!

Why Conclave Mentor?

The main reason that we chose Conclave Mentor is how they can easily make almost all of our buffs bigger and better! Conclave Mentor’s second ability is also very nice if we are against more aggressive strategies or Conclave Mentor is the victim of some removal from our opponents! Conclave Mentor also has the benefit of being able to come out super early and have an impact on almost all of our creatures!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck!

Creatures:

Our creature package of course has a bunch of ways to buff up our creatures and cards that benefit us for having counters like Longshot Squad, Ainok Bond-Kin and Tuskguard Captain which are great ways to give some keyword abilities to our creatures! Cards like Bloom Hulk are super good ways to make all of our creatures much bigger and come down pretty early as well! Since we are in Selesyna and don’t draw a ton of cards we have Entourage of Trest and Palace Sentinels which are both great ways to introduce the monarch to the game which we can often hold for multiple turns!

Ivy Lane Denizen is a really good card since we have so many creatures and we can get buffs for every one of them, Conclave Mentor makes this buff absolutely crazy! One of our most evasive creatures is Slith Ascendant is a great card that can get really big really fast! Supply Runners can often be used as a finisher since Conclave Mentor can make it absolutely crazy!

Instants:

Blinding Fog is a really cool card that is a fog effect with an upside! Light the Way is a great card for only one W that we can use to protectively bounce a permanent or re-ETB trigger it or we can simply untap a creature and give it a counter! Take Up the Shield and Unbounded Potential are both great ways to buff up creatures and in the case of Unbounded Potential that proliferate can be crazy especially if there are a lot of creatures out!

Sorceries:

Cultivate and Kodama's Reach account for the ramp spells for our deck and in testing I found these were more than enough ramp for our deck! Homestead Courage and Travel Preparations are both cheap ways to get counters. Ent's Fury and Smell Fear are both great ways for us to highlight all of our buffs and use them as ways to directly take out our opponents creatures!

Artifacts:

We of course have Arcane Signet and Bonder's Ornament but overall we dont have a ton of rocks since we really don’t need them! Campfire is a great way to gain some extra life or get Conclave Mentor after many deaths! Greatsword of Tyr and Implement of Ferocity are both great and pretty cheap ways to get some more counters on our creatures!

Enchantments:

We are in Selesyna so you know we absolutely had to include the Pauper EDH legend Armadillo Cloak which is just a really good card that is strong on pretty much any of our creatures! Captured by Lagacs is especially cool in our deck since we get to lock down an opponents creature and get some counters out of it! Forced Adaptation and Predatory Hunger are both ways to constantly trigger Conclave Mentor and just always be buffing a creature! Shield of the Oversoul is a card that we use mostly to protect Conclave Mentor and keep them around! Our last and in my opinon one of our coolest enchantments is Master Chef which is a great card that not only buffs Conclave Mentor but all of our other creatures on ETB!

Land Base:

Our land base is pretty simple, as is pretty common with most of the PDH decks we build on TNT there is the cycling lands like Slippery Karst and some duals like Thornglint Bridge. Our land base is simple but efficient and doesn’t have any surprises!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Easy to buff our creatures and make them stronger on offense and defense
  • Many ways to protect and buff our creatures
  • Conclave Mentor makes our deck better in every way

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Deck is weaker without Conclave Mentor
  • Weak to creature hate
  • Not much interaction

Deck Stats:

Sample hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We do not have any infinite loops or combos in the deck but we do have a ton of ways to buff up our creatures and swing for the fences! We are a combat deck through and through and we love turning things sideways

Conclusion:

In conclusion Conclave Mentor is a very sweet Selesyna commander who loves helping to buff up our creatures! Conclave Mentor is a really fun build-around commander who plays a lot like you would expect a Selesyna deck would play, but it is still a ton of fun to play!
