Commander Overview

Adelbert Steiner is a very awesome commander from the final fantasy set who is perfectly set up for an equipment focused deck, being in white truly does feel great here as we can run one of the best cards in the format in All that Glitters which combined with Adelbert abilities can easily allow us to get a one-shot on our opponent. Adelbert is in a primary role in this deck. They are a huge part of it. We do have some cards that can be alternate Voltron creatures, like Beloved Princess or Militant Inquisitor, which can be a great option if Adelbert keeps getting targeted. Still, we do have a lot of built-in protection in the deck, so we can keep Adelbert on the field as much as we can.

How to Play the Deck

This is an extremely easy deck to play, as long as you are good at counting and keeping track of how much equipment you have. There really aren’t a lot of complicated interactions in the deck. The most complicated things that we do in this deck involve us choosing what to protect. Overall, Adelbert is the best thing that we can protect, and something we always want to keep on the field. Adelbert also helps keep our life total high, so keeping them on the field is priority #1.

Synergy’s in the deck

The whole deck is synergized around equipment; it’s basically the only thing we do, but we have some great support cards like All that Glitters, Flaming Fist, which allow us to pack a crazy punch and be extremely resilient against other decks in combat. We do gain a lot of life from Adelbert, but overall, we don’t have many synergies besides keeping us alive.

Phases of the Game

Early-Game: We are actually great at the early-game, Adelbert only costs two and we have a ton of cheap equipment in the deck, by turn three or four we can be attacking pretty hard and going for the sweet commander damage kill, we do want to make sure we don’t overextend ourself as early-game removal is prevalent throughout the format but we can be quite aggressive in the early-game.

Mid-Game: Nothing really changes for us in the mid-game. We continue to buff up Adelbert and swing as much as we possibly can, always make sure to leave some mana up for Adelbert, and get some of our support creatures out, and you should be just fine.

Late-Game: Overall, we hope we don’t get to the late-game, mostly because our opponents have a lot bigger and better boards, and we can’t compete. Ending the game before the late-game is key, but if we can’t, we can lean on our life total here, since it is usually quite high.

Card Breakdowns

Ramp

We have next to no ramp in this deck but our commander only costs two mana and we have a ton of cheap protection, equipment and support cards within in the deck, because of this we don’t need to ramp even though we cards like Goldvein Pick and Gold Pan which are both great ways to get a bit ahead.

Card Draw/Card Advantage

Mono-white has always had a tough relationship with card draw, but we do have a few sources like Your Temple is Under Attack, which sadly helps our opponents, but we do take what we can get in mono-white. We also have Wedding Invitation, which is not only a source of cheap card draw; we can drop what we want, but using its sacrifice to make Adelbert unblockable can be a great way to end the game for us.

Removal

We have some good removal in the deck like Crib Swap, Generous Gift and Settle Beyond Reality we are a very selfish deck because if an opponent isn’t targeting us than we really don’t care what they do but being able to remove immediate threats can help keep us alive and keep an opponent from taking over the game. We also have some good enchantment-based removal like Trapped in the Screen, Web Up, and Oblivion Ring, which are cheap ways to get rid of a big problem quickly.

Protection

This is one of the strongest aspects of our deck and is the main reason we have such a big instant package, we have many ways to keep Adelbert on the board, and that is one of our main priorities within the deck, without them we aren’t super amazing and lack a lot of punch so using stuff like Blacksmith's Skill and Loran's Escape as cheap one-mana ways to keep Adelbert on the board! We are great at protecting our commander, while it doesn’t always happen, using our protection on an opponent’s creature can be a great political move for us if we need an opponent to help deal with a problematic opponent, an underrated aspect for all of the protection we have in the deck.

Utility / Support

Let’s highlight some of my favorite cards in the deck! Greatsword of Tyr is pretty much an auto-include in a lot of white decks for good reason, helps deal with an opponent’s best blocker, and continuously scales up Adelbert, just a great card for very little mana investment. I also got a ton of great use out of Transcendent Envoy, Starnheim Courser, and Foundry Inspector, which reduce the costs of a majority of our deck and even make some free to play. When we start getting into the late game, we can get a lot of great use out of Hedgewitch's Mask, which allows us to attack into bad combat situations without fear. If Adelbert does end up dying and we can’t bring them back, or we can bring them back and want to buff them up Battlefield Improvisation is an insane way to get everything on it all at once for only two mana

Mana Base

Our mana-base isn’t super exciting but is efficient, we have the on-color cycling lands like Drifting Meadow and Secluded Steppe which have some great card draw advantages in the mid-late game and I got a lot of great use out of Forge of Heroes to give Adelbert a quick and easy buff. We are running a little lean on lands in this deck because we have a low overall cost/curve. I tested many different versions of this landbase and found that thirty-three lands were a perfect number for the deck.

Win Conditions

Our only win condition is combat. This is made easier by Adelbert, who is great at getting big quickly, but we have no way to close out the game without turning Adelbert or any of our other creatures sideways.

Strengths of the Deck

Adelbert, having Lifelink, positions us very well against aggressive/creature-based strategies.

In just a few turns, we can easily turn Adelbert into keyword soup and make them extremely hard to deal with/block.

Weaknesses of the Deck

Just like most equipment decks, we are extremely reliant on Adelbert, and the game plan can be a lot slower without them.

Our card draw or lack of it can allow us to spend a lot of games with a low card in hand count, which can be tough to deal with.

Deck Testing/Matchups

I tested this deck against three different decks

Game 1: Vs Pizza Face, Gastromancer. Matchup Record: 3-2

This was an ok matchup, we can struggle to block against them but the best thing for us is that they are just as slow as we are, because of this we can get some early-gain damage/lifegain that allows us to be attacked heavily and not care as much, Pizza Face is also Golgari so keeping up protection is key here.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Shelter, Trapped in the Screen and Benevolent Blessing.

Game 2: Vs Juri, Master of the Revue. Matchup Record: 0-3

This is a terrible matchup for our deck, they have so many sacrifice effects in the deck which can make it extremely hard for us to keep Adelbert on the board, and that makes our game plan fall completely flat.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Benevolent Bodyguard, Amorphous Axe and Reprobation.

Game 3: Vs Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. Matchup Record: 3-0

I had a lot of success in this matchup. The life we can gain from Adelbert greatly outpaces the damage Tetsuko can output, and while we have to watch for their counters or bounce spells, nothing they really do sets us back that much. This was a great matchup for our deck.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Flaming Fist, Break Ties and Darksteel Axe.

Conclusion

Thanks so much for reading to the end! I hope you all enjoyed this one! Adelbert Steiner is an extremely fun mono-white commander that is perfect for a player of any skill level and is a ton of fun to play, Adelbert having lifelink is awesome for the deck because it helps cover up our big weakness of not being able to block all that much, buff em up and swing em hard is all you do here but it is a lot of fun.
