Aeve, Progenitor Ooze Slime Against Humanity

Commander Overview

Aeve is a very interesting commander; it does feel pretty unbelievable to have a mono-green commander that has storm. Aeva is a weird commander, but one that’s really cool. At the same time, I do love the ooze creature type i did find it better to go with Slime Against Humanity instead of focusing on oozes as I thought combining Slime Against Humanity with our cost reducers like Emerald Medallion and The Earth Crystal would allow us to not only have a big board but a ton of our commander as well. This deck is certainly casual and way more on the fun side, and Aeve is fully in a support role, while we have a ton of ways to get our storm count high, and we can win the game with only our Slimes. While Aeve is the support general of a casual deck, this can certainly pack a punch. We have a cool thirty-two Slime Against Humanitys within the deck so we can get very big, very quickly. While Aeve may not have a huge role in the deck, they are still a great option.

How to Play the Deck

This is one of the easiest decks you can play in the format, not a lot of thought required here as long as you have a good understanding of how to play the game and are good at tapping three (hopefully less) and casting a Slime Against Humanity, then you should be good. There’s almost no complex interactions in our deck outside of Aeve, Progenitor Ooze since they do have storm, and that can be overwhelming if an opponent doesn’t know what it does. Overall, this deck is perfect for a player of any skill level and is very easy to use.

Synergy’s in the deck

Our whole deck is synergized around our Oozes, while Slime Against Humanity is by far the best source of Oozes we have. We have a great amount of support for them with cards like Biogenic Ooze, which helps buff up our big Oozes even more. Because of how Slime Against Humanity is worded, the power and toughness that they gain are +1/+1 counters. Because of this, we have a decent support package for +1/+1 counters with cards like Branching Evolution and Loading Zone being cheap, strong options to make our trample oozes hit even harder. Our whole deck is synergized for our oozes and our Slime against Humanitys, and that allows us to be very strong in combat.

Phases of the Game

Early-Game: Since our whole game plan is focused on casting as many Slime Against Humanitys as we can, we can actually get our game plan started very early; we only need three mana to start the party. We take what our deck gives us, which is almost always more copies of Slime Against Humanity.

Mid-Game: By the mid-game, we are easily have a pretty big board courtesy of our slimes, by this point we typically have some of our big-mana producers like Circle of Dreams Druid and Karametra’s Acolyte these allow us to cast a ton of Slimes and build up our board and if we have enough mana to go around we can cast Aeve easily with a pretty high storm count. When our slimes get bigger, we tend to be aggressive since they are big and can trample. We can dish out a lot of damage in the mid-game and get bigger a lot quicker than our opponents.

Late-Game: We are great in the late-game. By this point, we have a pretty huge board and can withstand even the biggest creatures our opponents have to offer. Our slimes get bigger and bigger, and when combined with some of our +1/+1 counter payoffs like Branching Evolution, we are quite tough to stop when we get to the late-game.

Card Breakdowns

Ramp

We have ramp creatures in the deck like Karametra’s Acolyte and Circle of Dreams Druid but we dont really use them to ramp, we mostly use them to cast more slimes and fill up our board, while we can ramp into some of our bigger creatures we want to cast more and more slimes and having these is great for when we cast Aeve with a big storm counter. We also have Cultivate and Kodama’s Reach, which are cheap and easy sources of ramp that help us with the overall goal of filling our board with slimes.

Card Draw/Card Advantage

We are pretty good at mass card draw, but don’t have a ton of sources. Cards like Harmonize and Shamanic Revelation are great options for the deck, but are not amazing if we fall behind because Shamanic Revelation specifically cares about our creature count, which we hope is high, but it’s not always. Chronicle of Victory and Tribute to the World Tree are more consistent sources of card draw for the deck. I’ve never had any trouble with having cards in hand and access to cards in this deck.

Removal

This is one of the weakest aspects of our deck, we have next to no removal in the deck, all we really have outside of combat is Beast Within and Nature’s Claim, this is not a deck that is very focused on removal and we are very much a selfish deck, its all about us in this one! Since we are so limited, I always make sure whatever I Beast Within is worth it; it’s the only direct source of removal we have.

Protection

While our removal package is pretty bad, we have a decent protection package. Opponents love to target our support cards like Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and Circle of Dreams Druid; they simply don’t want us to have access to that much mana. Because of this, we have both Snakeskin Veil and Tamiyo’s Safekeeping, which are cheap and strong ways to protect our creatures. Overall, we don’t care that much about whether our stuff dies; our opponents can try all they want, but the slimes against humanity will keep coming.

Utility / Support

While our deck is primarily slime against humanity, we do have some wonderful support cards! Branching Evolution and Loading Zone are two amazing ways to make our slimes and most of our oozes bigger. Aeve interacts extremely well with both of these cards since they can gain a ton of counters. Springleaf Parade is an awesome card as well, dumping a ton of mana, making more oozes, and more importantly, they can tap for mana, allowing us to not only cast more slimes but also get a huge storm count to cast Aeve and get a ton of value. Aeve and the slimes against humanity are a huge part of our deck, but we do have some awesome support oozes as well! Biogenic Ooze is a great way to grow our board passively and interacts well with our +1/+1 counter synergies. Ravenous Slime is another amazing creature that can get huge quickly and is a great attacker/blocker for the deck. Ravenous Slime can get just huge if they are able to sit on the board, even for only a few turns.

Mana Base

We have a pretty simple mana base consisting mostly of forests, but we do have some awesome non-basics. Evendo, Waking Heaven is essentially a Gaea’s Cradle for our deck, and with how many creatures we have on the board regularly, it is very easy for us to station it to twelve plus. I also love Oran-Rief, The Vastwood since we have a ton of mana production in the deck and because of our cost reducers like Emerald Medallion, casting a ton of slimes against humanity in one turn is extremely easy to do, and being able to get a bit of an extra buff can be quite helpful. Rogue’s Passage is great, especially in late-game situations where you aren’t able to hit through our opponents’ defenses. While we are very heavy on just Forests, we have some great non-basics in the deck.

Win Conditions

Our only win conditions are combat, Slime Against Humanity greatly aids in this since we get progressively bigger and they have trample. Our Ooze-focused game plan is greatly aided by both Overwhelming Stampede and Craterhoof Behemoth. These are both game-enders in this deck.

Strengths of the Deck

Almost all of the creatures we have on the board have trample; we are very good at running our opponents over.

We can get a big board quite quickly, even in the early game, we can hit like a truck.

Weaknesses of the Deck

Weak to board wipes, while we can rebuild decently, we can lose a lot of our momentum.

We have next to no removal in the deck, we have to have a selfish game plan, and outside of Beast Within, we can’t stop what our opponents are doing.

Deck Testing/Matchups

I tested this deck against three different decks

Game 1: Vs Caesar, Legion’s Emperor. Matchup Record: 3-1

I liked this matchup a lot for us, Caesar can flood the board just like we can, but we are just a lot bigger, our creatures mostly having trample helps us a lot since they can’t just chump block against us. Stick to the game plan here, and you should be just fine.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Springleaf Parade, Heroic Intervention and Thrumming Stone.

Game 2: Vs Vren, the Relentless. Matchup Record: 0-3

This was a terrible matchup for our deck; we have almost no way to kill Vren, and they can wreak havoc on our creature-heavy game plan. I tried and tried in this one, but it did not go well.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Beast Within, Mitotic Slime and Fog.

Game 3: Vs Yuma, Proud Protector. Matchup Record: 3-0

I didn’t have any trouble with this matchup, Yuma’s army of 4/2’s with reach just aren’t very scary to us, the slimes outpace them easily, and we hit very hard before they are able to do that much. We still continue to be selfish in our game plan and focus on ourselves.

Cards that worked really well in this matchup:
Early Harvest, Inspiring Call and Circle of Dreams Druid.

Conclusion

Thanks so much for reading to the end! I hope you all enjoyed it. Aeve is a very fun deck, Ooze is a crazy creature type, and being able to play Slime Against Humanity is an amazing option for this deck that is not only strong but very thematic as well. Aeve is a commander you rarely see, but it is a true hidden gem and a lot of fun.
