Bear’s Companion Bouncing Bears Pauper EDH

“Five-headed grizzly bear, tear your soul apart”

Art:Bear's Companion by Winona Nelson

Big shoutout to DracV_Pauper Dude@pauper_b on Twitter for the suggestion! Check out their account as well as The PDH Pod! There content helped TNT get into Pauper EDH so huge shoutout to them!

Bear’s Companion is a really fun Temur commander from one of my personal favorite sets of all time! Bear’s companion really embodies the Temur playstyle, while a 2/2 for 5 may seem underwhelming it also comes with a 4/4 bear! In our deck we can bounce and occasionally flicker our bear’s companion to absolutely overwhelm the board and swing for the fences, if we cant use our bounce / flicker offensively we can absolutely bounce our opponents best permanents and clear the way for us!

Why Bear’s Companion?

Bear’s Companion is a key part of our deck and is in every way a build-around card for the deck. Bear’s Companion is one of the best cards we have and is a heavy part of our main win condition! Bear’s companion can come out pretty early if we ramp a ton!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

This may be shocking but we have a ton of creatures that we can bounce Bear’s Companion with like Aether Adept, Shrieking Drake and Aethersnipe which are all great ways to bounce Bear’s Companion! We also have creatures that are beneficial to bounce like Mulldrifter, Entourage of Trest and Crimson Fleet Commodore, Bouncing Monarch cards not only lets us get some card advantage but we get a benefit from these creatures as well! Maul Splicer is one of our craziest cards to bounce since we get a bunch more tokens and this makes our attacks even easier! Because of how much power we have regularly we can use cards like Stampeding Elk Herd to make them even more of a nightmare to deal with!

Instants:

Bounce, Bounce, Bounce! Whether we are bouncing our opponents creatures or Bear’s Companion our bounce package is strong! Run Away Together is one of my favorite bounce spells in the deck since we get a Bear’s Companion trigger and get to bounce a key creature of our opponents! Snap is another really cool bounce spell since it is basically free! Planar Incision is a really good card that is a cheap bounce with a buff! In case we have a bunch of creatures get mass removed we can use Wrap in Vigor to save them all!

We are a Temur deck so we of course have some counterspells like Arcane Denial, Counterspell and Negate, we have a few others but the idea is always the same whether we are protecting ourself or stopping our opponents from going off these are pretty much always good!

Sorceries:

Our sorcery package is where a lot of our ramp lies like Farseek, Kodama's Reach and Cultivate not too much to say great cheap cards that can help us get all of our colors out! We have a ton of draw with cards like Ponder, Preordain and Lórien Revealed which are all very strong card draw effects that are good at pretty much any stage of the game! Flame Slash is a great card to deal with a pesky creature or commander!

Artifacts:

Our artifact package has a ton of mana rocks like Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone and Temur Banner Temur Banner is a card that most dont play in PDH but I thought this card was perfect for the deck! Since we attack a lot I felt that Wedding Invitation is a strong card for the deck, while we dont typically have a one-shot attack we do have a draw card effect and unblockable on a two mana artifact!

Enchantments:

Fall from Favor and Lignify are great ways to basically destroy an opponents commander or one of their best creatures! Impact Tremors is just extra damage and payoff for making a bunch of bear tokens! Master Chef is a really strong way to buff up a commander or a bunch of our creatures perfect for our tokens!

Land Base:

We are a 3 color deck so our land base is a little more intensive than a typical pauper edh build. But we still have a ton of classics like Tranquil Thicket, Lonely Sandbar and Forgotten Cave. I also have really been liking the March of the Machine draw lands like The Surgical Bay and the The Hunter Maze. Both of these land cycles are really strong for the deck and can be a strong source of card draw for the deck! Besides that we have a bunch of duals in Temur colors that help to round out the deck!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Decent ramp package
  • A ton of card draw
  • Overwhelm our board with Bear tokens

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to aggressive strategies as it usually takes some time to get our attackers / blockers up
  • Deck is much slower if we cant hit our ramp pieces
  • Weak to single target removal

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We have no infinite combos or loops in the deck, our typical gameplan focuses on controlling our opponents board with bounce effects and using some of our bounce effects to bounce Bear's Companion and make a ton of 4/4 tokens and swing for the fences! We have a bunch ETB’s on our creatures that are strong as well that we can bounce!

Conclusion:

In conclusion Bear’s companion is a really fun commander! Being in Temur allows us to do a ton of different things with the deck! Whether we are using our bounce’s offensively or defensively we can still effectively put pressure on our opponents! Bear’s Companion is the leader of a deck that is as Temur as they come and is just an absolute blast to play! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of the support!
