“I’ll make weapons from your bones.”

Blaring Captain / Blaring Recruiter are two really sweet commanders that interact super well! While warriors is a not one of the most popular creature types in magic there is still an absolute ton of support. We are an Orzhov deck with a bunch of removal, interaction and card draw as well as a ton of warriors this allows us to be multi-dimensional as well as have a strong board presence and control the board through combat! This deck is an absolute blast, and without further adieu lets get it!

Why Blaring Captain / Blaring Recruiter?

Blaring Captain and Blaring Recruiter are great together and synergize super well together which is absolutely expected. There is no real preference on which one we bring out first, but I typically bring out Blaring Recruiter since we can get some creature production going if we have a turn where we don’t have a ton of things to cast. Blaring Captain is no doubt the strongest of the two since they are a huge anthem for all of our warriors and can be instrumental in helping us close out a game!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

We have an absolute ton of warriors, some of them don’t have a bunch of interesting abilities or effects but can be strong. Cards like Aven Skirmisher and Beskir Shieldmate are both really great cards that can come down early and when we start transitioning to the mid-late game can use these buffed up and get some key damage in! We do have a ton of creatures with sweet abilities like Aurora Champion and Sickle Dancer are both really great cards that are two of the best pieces of warrior support we have in the deck! Tah-Crop Elite is a great warrior who gives us an additional buff! A card we often use as a finisher is Gray Merchant of Asphodel which is one of the few creatures that we have that is not a warrior but can be a great way to get those last points of damage in or just drain our opponents and get some life back!

Instants:

To start out our instant package is full of a bunch of strong removal like Crib Swap, Doom Blade and Go for the Throat which are all cheap pieces of removal. My two favorite instants in the deck are Riot Control and Crypt Incursion which are both super strong against the right decks and even if you are not in a preferred matchup how do you say no to either of these effects! Your Temple Is Under Attack is a great piece of creature protection or a good way to build some political good will with an opponent!

Sorceries:

Read the Bones, Night's Whisper and Sign in Blood are all staples within black PDH and for good reason these are all amazing draw spells! Settle Beyond Reality is a great way to re-ETB a key creature and exile an annoying creature from our opponents! Rush of Battle is a great way to anthem up our creatures and since we are almost all warriors we can lifelink our entire board this card is a great way to fight back against aggressive strategies! Return from Extinction is a great way to get some key warriors back!

Artifacts:

Since some of our warriors are a little high on the curve our artifact package is filled to the brim with a ton of mana rocks with some of the best being Arcane Signet and Orzhov Signet! Greatsword of Tyr is really the perfect equipment for our deck since we can buff a creature and tap down a scary blocker!

Enchantments:

Journey to Nowhere and Oblivion Ring are both really strong pieces of removal that are absolutely perfect for any commanders or any key creatures! Cartouche of Solidarity is a super cheap enchantment that is really a win-win for our deck since we can buff and make a creature better at combat as well as create a warrior!

Land Base:

Even though we have a bunch of draw spells we can flood occasionally so being able to draw out some of our lands can be really strong with both on-color desert lands, all of the on-color cycling lands and The Dross Pits and The Fair Basilica are all great ways to get some cards at any stage of the game! Citadel Gate and Black Dragon Gate are just additional Orzhov duals that are great to have! Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse are our decks “fetches” and can provide some strong fixing!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • A ton of buffs / and positive interactions with the warrior creature type
  • Decent amount of card draw / interaction
  • Pretty strong against aggressive strategies

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate
  • Weak to counterspells
  • Weak to control decks, we can but are much worse when we have to go “long”

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

There are no infinite combos or loops in the deck. We win the game through all of our buffs from our deck in commander through combat!

Conclusion:

Blaring Captain and Blaring Recruiter are really cool partners that allow us to highlight a creature type that doesn’t have an absolute ton of support within the format. This deck is absolutely a creature deck but feels more fun and who doesn’t love a little Orzhov buffs. This deck is one of my favorite to date and I have been piloting this one quite frequently while it may not be a CPDH deck it is absolutely a strong and fun deck! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of your support!
