Brewed CEDH: Jorn Blizzard Stax

You’re as cold as ice!

Art: Jorn, God of Winter // Kaldring, the Rimestaff by Magali Villeneuve

Please note since this is CEDH no budget considerations have been made.

Welcome to another installment of Brewed CEDH:

Jorn God of winter is very fun commander with a lot of CEDH potential. Jorn fits best into a Stax/ Midrange Stax shell where you can utilize Jorn’s attack to nullify the effects of the stax pieces against you. We can use this to setup our many combos within the deck we are packing a ton of Stax and a decent amount of interaction!

Why Jorn, God of Winter?

There are many great Stax options for CEDH like Winota, Joiner of Forces and Heliod, Sun-Crowned, I think Jorn may not be the top option but offers a fun and exciting playstyle. Jorn may not be packed to the brim with combos but he offers a way for us to not be hindered by the Stax effects we play utilizing Jorn’s ability + cards like Seedborn Muse to gain a large mana advantage and out resource our opponent while getting our combo setup. We almost will never be casting Jorn on his flip side as well the artifact is good untapping our permanents that are being locked down by Stax is considerably better.

Deck Overview:

Since we are a Stax deck we are playing a lot of the classic Stax pieces like Thorn of Amethyst and Sphere of Resistance. Although we are playing some less common Stax pieces like Root Maze. Some of our other Stax pieces include Back to Basics and Stasis, Back to Basics is seriously strong in CEDH due to the extremely high frequency of non-basic lands. Since we have a bunch of BUG Snow Basics cards like back to basics do not effect us as much but can really hurt our opponent. Stasis in another fan favorite Stax card which we can minimize the effects not only with Jorn attack but also with cards like Seedborn Muse. Since we are playing Jorn we are packing snow permanents which not only is another way to keep our mana up when Stax pieces are on the board but benefit us with cards like Dead of Winter which can be great against Winota, Joiner of Forces. We have multiple ways to tutor up the combo such as Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor and Mystical Tutor our are primary ways to get the combo together, since our combo is relatively fragile as it is pretty much our sole wincon we are quite weak to Praetor's Grasp We can make up for this by packing a decent amount of counterspells to stop our combo pieces from being countered. Without the combo this deck can be kind of winconless but can still disrupt the game heavily and get some sneaky wins. Wandering Archaic // Explore the Vastlands is a card that is not often played in CEDH but when triggered can have a large impact on the game allowing us to cast a copy of the spell our opponent is casting, since we are playing a large artifact package it is very easy for us to cast this quite early and immediately start getting the benefits from it on the early turns. Our artifact package is very classic CEDH packing staples like Mana Crypt, Mana Vault and Lotus Petal like most decks in CEDH our artifact package is just mana acceleration so we don’t get outpaced.

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Relatively low casting cost combined with strong artifacts lets us place Stax pieces early
  • Jorn’s effect nullifys our Stax effects hurting us
  • Can control the game with Stax to set up combos

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak against turn 1-2 explosive decks, sometimes opponents can outpace us
  • Extremely weak to Praetor’s Grasp
  • Weak to Winonta decks or any type of explosive creature deck

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

Our primary combo is Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation this is our primary way to win, the main point of this deck is stalling until we can assemble this.

Conclusion:

In Conclusion Jorn is a well positioned and fun Midrange / Stax style CEDH commander. While us only having one combo is a narrow way to win we can stax our opponents out until we can get it together. We are packing a large stax package and a medium sized spell package to allow us to interact while this may not be a tier 1 CEDH deck it still is a ton of fun!

Thanks for reading to the end!
