Welcome to another installment of Brewed EDH:
Todays Featured Commander is:
Commisar Severina is an awesome commander from the Warhammer 40K collab with magic, she is an aristocrats style commander based on her abilities and also a great shell for soldier tribal. She is a ton of fun and can deal a crazy amount of damage, she is a typical tribal deck with some extra added damage on top!
The Deck:
Commissar Severina Soldiers!
Why Commissar Severina Raine?
There are a lot of great options for Soldier tribal commander decks like Darien, King of Kjeldor and Baird, Argivian Recruiter but the main advantage of playing Severina is not only her ablility to deal a ton of damage when attacking and being a built in draw / sac outlet its that she is a black white allowing us to play a wider range of spells and cards within our deck. While our creature base does not utilize a ton of black creatures we do use it for value enchantments. Overall Severina is a great creature with abilities that allow us to end games quickly!
Deck Overview:
Our main goal of the deck is to create as many soldiers as possible and utilize Severina’s ablility to hurt our opponents and gain value just from declaring attackers! Since Severina is a soldier she is able to gain all of the buffs we put on with cards like Coppercoat Vanguard and Daru Warchief. While we are by no means a commander damage based deck we do almost always want to be attacking with Severina to deal additional damage when declaring attackers so extra protection is always nice when swinging into opponents creatures. One of the best cards to trigger Sevarina and protect her is Reconnaissance with it we can freely get the trigger and do some damage with her trigger and protect her. Another great card to protect Sevarina is Rescue Retriever which protects are creatures from taking damage when they are attacking Sevarina also has the ability to sac a creature and draw a card, we are not going to use this often but can be great when sacrificing a token and being able to get some card advantage in colors without a lot of card advantage and we will never complain about lifegain! Since we are a BW soldier deck tokens are very easy to produce and we have a lot of payoff cards that not only make Severina’s attack trigger stronger but also make us more tokens which can get out of hand quickly. Cards like Mondrak, Glory Dominus are great ways to generate crazy amounts of tokens with cards like Myrel, Shield of Argive with both cards on the field we are able to generate a ridiculous amount of tokens which makes Severina’s trigger that much stronger. Since we are a tribal deck we are packing tribal staples like Urza's Incubator, Herald's Horn and Vanquisher's Banner all to make our creatures cheaper. Overall Severina makes for a strong tribal deck with a ton of opportunities to protect her and get her attack trigger off while maintaining a large board state through our creatures!
Strengths of the Deck:
- Severina can end games quickly
- A lot of supporting black cards for removal
- Combo potential can eliminate all opponents quickly
Weaknesses of the Deck:
- Weak to token / creature hate
- Not much interaction outside of our creatures
- Hard to draw cards without supporting cards
Deck Stats:
Sample hands:
Main Win conditions:
Our primary win condition is Severina’s attack trigger + tombat damage but we are packing one combo in the deck:
Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward + Animate Dead
Combo Explanation:
Steps: Cast Animate Dead by paying 1 and a Black, returning Abdel Adrian from your graveyard to the battlefield, and attaching Animate Dead to it. Abdel Adrian enters the battlefield, exiling Animate Dead until Abdel Adrian leaves the battlefield, and creating a 1/1 Soldier creature token. Animate Dead triggers, causing you to sacrifice Abdel Adrian. Animate Dead returns to the battlefield, returning Abdel Adrian from your graveyard to the battlefield, and attaching Animate Dead to it. Repeat from step 2.
Result: Infinite creature tokens. Infinite ETB. Infinite LTB. Infinite death triggers. Infinite sacrifice triggers. Infinite blinking.
With one Severina attack after this combo we can end the game
Conclusion:
Severina is one of the most fun commanders from the Warhammer collab with MTG, combining a very flavorful card with a very fun soldier deck lets you do some wacky stuff with your combat step while staying true to the Black-White playstyle. Overall Severina is a very fun commander that is great for newer and older players and offers a very fun experience!
Thanks for Reading to the end!
