Why Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale?

There are an ungodly amount of Equipment commanders but Syr Gwyn separates herself with card draw and knights tribal. Knights are a well supported and costed tribe, there is a a lot of support for equipment built into knights and Syr Gwyn enhances that support greatly. Swinging early and often with some added card draw is one of the main reasons we chose Syr Gwyn. Cards like Knights' Charge give the knights tribe an extra leg up compared to other equipment commanders!

Deck Overview:

Syr Gwyn is a strong equipment / knights deck that stays on tribe and even has combo potential in a color combo not known for infinite combos. We also have a really strong search package utilizing Steelshaper's Gift, Enlightened Tutor, Stonehewer Giant and Stoneforge Mystic. Our knights have a lot of base abilites that stats that make them powerful even without equipment like Mirran Crusader but if you throw a sword or another equipment on a creature like that and you very quickly can become a threat. Some of our other best knights include Hero of Bladehold, Kinsbaile Cavalierand Danitha, Benalia's Hope just to name a few. Another card I want to highlight is Halvar, God of Battle // Sword of the Realms which is an absolute bomb in Syr Gwyn. Not only does Syr Gwyn allow for free equipment we have other ways to make it free like Puresteel Paladin. Some of the equipment / auras in our deck are absolute bombs once they hit the field such as Mantle of the Ancients and Embercleave. We are able to play and recur our equipment frequently, we can make even the most small knight in to a force to be reckoned with. Since we are in Mardu we also play format staples like Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile. Akroma's Will and Master Warcraft which allows us to manipulate combat in our favor throwing an opponents creature directly into a Colossus Hammer. We also have some good combo potential with Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host to create infinite hasty Godo’s. Are other combo is Aggravated Assault + Sword of Feast and Famine for Infinite combats. We may not be the quickest deck we do have some powerful early game creatures like Student of Warfare but once we get going they are going to have a quite a time trying to stop us. Overall I think this deck is a fun multi-faceted deck that can end games quickly.

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Powerful Tribe with lots of support
  • Free and low costed equipment gives us easy stat buffs to turn the game
  • Strong even without equipment

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak against spellslingers/combo decks
  • Not a true voltron deck need multiple creatures
  • Weak against artifact and creature destruction

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

Besides just attacking our main combo way to win is Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host. A secondary combo is Sword of Feast and Famine + Aggravated Assault.

Conclusion:

In conclusion Syr Gwyn is a really fun multi-facted deck with great attack / combo potential. There are a lot of really fun cards to mess around with. Syr Gwyn can quickly become out of hand for your opponents to deal with, attack early and often and assemble those combos!

Thanks for reading to the end!
