Why Toxrill the Corrosive?

Toxrill is one of the best -1/-1 counter commanders, not only is he easy to cast with quick mana like Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual Toxrill also sticks to the board very well, he has a profound impact almost instantly. Toxrill was chosen not only for his ability to take players completely out of the game but his creature generation with his second ability gets out of hand quickly. This deck works through various Blood Artist style effects, and if that isn’t enough we can win through are crazy amount of creature generation combined with our blood artist effects for a decently quick win. We also have a powerful proliferate package to make the slime counters worse and kill of those bigger creatures by proliferating -1/-1’s.

Deck Overview:

The first step to succeeding with this deck is to get Toxrill on the battlefield as soon as you can, starting the slime counter effect to make small creatures non-existent, just one turn around a 3 player game and creatures smaller than 3/3 cannot survive. We mainly win through blood artist effects, in addition to blood artist we also have cards like Zulaport Cutthroat. We also use a proliferate package to increase the number of slime counters and -1/-1 counters on creatures. we have counterspells that proliferate, creatures that proliferate and even draw spells that proliferate. Although the deck functions fine without Toxrill, he is really the piece that ties it all together. We are even well poised against +1/+1 strategies with cards like Blightbeetle. One of our most powerful cards in the deck is Drivnod, Carnage Dominus with him we can get an additional 1/1 slug from Toxrill’s ability. Another highlight of the deck is Crumbling Ashes which is in most games a free kill spell at our upkeep. While we do not play any infinite combos this deck is still very oppressive and fast. Toxrill may have trouble against combo decks, any creature strategy is severely hampered against us.

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Very hard to stop when it gets going
  • A high number of slime counters is devasting to any creature decks
  • Small countermagic package for protection / prevention
  • Proliferate package makes Toxrill out of hand quickly

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Games are harder without Toxrill on Board
  • Struggles against non-creature decks
  • bad against combo decks

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions/combos:

The main win condition is Blood Artist style effects as well as using toxrill’s ability to generate and sacrifice the slugs he creates. Toxrill combined with Necroskitter can also help turn the tides by giving you your opponents creatures dying to our slime counters. Our main win condition is denying the board for opponents and controlling the game from there.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I think that Toxrill is a very fun and interesting commander, while I don’t think we will be popular and will likely get eyerolls when Toxrill is cast I think he is a fun form -1/-1 tribal. With multiple packages in this deck we can play more of a control shell or a midrange shell. Toxrill is a great creature generator whether we sacrifice those or attack with them. If you are in a heavy creature Meta give Toxrill a try!

Thanks for reading to the end!

Would love to hear your feedback on the deck!
