Caparocti Sunborn Artifact Voltron Pauper EDH

“Some stones are best left unturned.”

Art:Caparocti Sunborn by Donato Giancola

Caparocti Sunborn is an absolute bomb of a commander, with an ability that is very to easy trigger and get us some free cards, who can say no to free cards! We are a Voltron deck through and through and spend many of our early turns either ramping through mana rocks or committing more and more equipment to the field. We are able to Voltron up one or multiple creatures depending on the situation but we can very quickly become a pretty big threat to our opponents. While we have a lot of the weaknesses of the Boros deck being decently quick in building a threat makes us tough to attack even with big creatures. Without further adieu lets get it!

Why Caparocti Sunborn?

Caparocti Sunborn is a card that helps our deck greatly, but we never need to cast it if we don’t want to or the situation warrants it. Being able to tap creatures/artifacts or a combination gives us a ton of flexibility and lets us trigger Caparocti Sunborn an absolute ton. While we often use Caparocti Sunborn as our Voltron creature and for good reason we can very easily get the requirements for their trigger and get some free cards! Being 1/4 of the opponent’s commander damage threshold is a really strong attribute for Caparocti Sunborn as well.

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

Starnheim Courser and Bladegraft Aspirant are two easy-to-cast creatures that reduce the cost of a large majority of our deck. Goblin Gaveleer and Champion of the Flame are the alternative Voltron creatures that can be great if Caparocti Sunborn is being heavily targeted. Reckless Fireweaver is a great way to translate damage into a card type we are casting frequently. Skyscanner is not only a piece of card draw but it helps with Caparocti Sunborn as well which is pretty strong for only 3 mana. Crimson Fleet Commodore is not only a great aggressive creature but being the monarch gives us more cards, which we will never say no too.

Instants:

Big Score and Unexpected Windfall are not only great draw spells but are especially good in this deck since we can use them for Caparocti Sunborn’s ability. Abrade, Generous Gift, and Crib Swap are all strong pieces of removal for us, we are by no means focused on controlling the board so we use these to remove urgent/key threats. Double Cleave and Temur Battle Rage are both great spells that can help us hit for a ton of damage. We also have some instants that can help protect our Voltron creature like Your Temple Is Under Attack and Blacksmith's Skill which are great ways to protect from single-target removal.

Sorceries:

Our sorcery package has a lot of cool cards like Righteous Charge which I found can be a great way to get that little bit of extra damage needed to take out an opponent. Cosmotronic Wave and Hazardous Blast not only are strong against token strategies but give us a free hit and that can often be game-ending. Incite Hysteria isn’t always strong but protection can be great in a variety of situations. Recommission is a really strong piece of recursion for our deck and is great in a variety of situations.

Artifacts:

Since Caparocti Sunborn is often our Voltron creature we often Discover into equipment, I found that equipment that ETB and attach themselves was a really strong way to establish blockers for your opponent’s turns. Some of the best cards that attach themselves include Ancestral Blade, Cliffhaven Kitesail, and Utility Knife. We of course have classic Voltron equipment like Whispersilk Cloak, Brass Knuckles, and Haunted Cloak which are all really strong cards that make us evasive and hit harder. Hunter's Blowgun is a really interesting new card because we don’t often put it onto our Voltron creature since we want to take advantage of it as a blocker since we are quite weak against flying creatures, while we usually leave it back we can take advantage of being aggressive and swing in for the deathtouch. Hunter’s Blowgun is an equipment I find myself moving around a lot.

Enchantments:

We have some strong pieces of removal in our enchantment package like Journey to Nowhere, Oblivion Ring which are all great early or late-game ways to remove creatures or commanders. Flaming Fist is especially strong if Caparocti Sunborn is our Voltron creature. Angelic Gift not only makes our Voltron creature more evasive but it also draws a card. Scourge of the Nobilis is a great card for Caparocti Sunborn and it gives a ton of benefits for only 3 mana. Giving our commander natural buffs + Firebreathing and lifelink is very strong for only 3 mana. All That Glitters is by far the best enchantment in our deck and provides a ridiculous buff to our Voltron creature.

Land Base:

We have two new additions to our land base, that I think are very strong Hidden Courtyard and Hidden Volcano which are both a great way to get extra cards in the late-game. We of course have the TNT classic land base with cards like The Fair Basilica and Desert of the Fervent as well as a ton more! Tocasia's Dig Site is a real asset to Boros decks as a strong way to filter through the deck. Captivating Cave is another great card that we can use to buff up our Voltron creature.

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Can build a big threat quite quickly and very easily
  • Our commander allows us to get free cards easily
  • There are a decent amount of ways to control the combat step and guarantee getting damage in

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • While we do have protection we are often relying on one creature so single-target removal can be strong against us
  • Weak to artifact hate
  • Expected weaknesses of Boros, mostly card draw

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

There are no infinite combos or loops in the deck. Since we are a Voltron deck, we have a few candidates for a Voltron creature, including Champion of the Flame. Goblin Gaveleer and of course Caparocti Sunborn. We have an absolute ton of equipment that allows us to kill with commander damage or depending on the creature we use just regular damage. We also have some strong ways to guarantee damage and hits with cards like Cosmotronic Wave and Hazardous Blast. We have a ton of ways to end the game and while all of them are through combat we can still easily threaten and pressure our opponents.

Conclusion:

Caparocti Sunborn is one of my favorite cards from LCI and since spoiler season I have begun to brew a list for this. Caparocti Sunborn is a perfect Voltron commander with great stats and an easy path to get even more free equipments / cards. This is a really fun deck that in the past week or so of testing I have had an absolute blast playing, it is really nice to get free cards on top of efficient creatures within combat. Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of the support!
