Why Chakram Slinger / Chakram Retriever?

Since both Chakram Slinger and Chakram Retriever are partners they naturally play off of each other but they also are great utility pieces! Chakram Slinger can’t damage any planeswalkers in Pauper EDH so we focus on hitting players, Chakram Retriever is no doubt the stronger partner since there are so many sweet cards that we can untap! We can trigger Chakram Retriever an absolute ton of times in even a single turn and once we get going it can be quite hard to stop us!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

The most important creatures in our deck are creatures that deal damage on spellcast and we have quite a few in Guttersnipe, Erebor Flamesmith and Kessig Flamebreather just to name a few! All of these are great ways to turn all of our spellcasting into some real damage! And what would be sweet creatures that care about instants and sorceries without a way to make our spells cheaper so of course we have Goblin Electromancer and Mocking Sprite! Since we have a bunch of spells we can use Archaeomancer and Ardent Elementalist as strong ways to get key spells back! We also have some creatures that interact really well with Chakram Retrievers ability to untap. Prodigal Pyromancer and Prodigal Sorcerer are great cards for some damage that we can use to hurt our opponents even more!

Instants:

Even though these are instants because of Chakram Retriever we mostly want to cast a lot of these on our turn! But we do have some counterspells and such they we want to keep for our opponents, sweet cards like Counterspell, Arcane Denial and Logic Knot! We also have some cantrips like Shadow Rift, Opt and Whispers of the Muse! We also have some cards that allow us to untap like Toils of Night and Day and Dramatic Reversal are really great ways to untap a bunch!

Sorceries:

Just like our instant package we have a bunch of draws and cantrips at sorcery speed as well! Gitaxian Probe, Ponder and Preordain are all really strong ways to draw cards and in the case of Gitaxian Probe see what an opponent is working with! Merchant Scroll is a really powerful card that can let us grab a strong mana card like Mana Geyser! Once we have a ton of mana we can use that towards a card like Rolling Thunder to clear the board or hit a couple opponents! Train of Thought is another card we can take advantage of if we have a lot of mana!

Artifacts:

Most of our artifact package is mana with sweet rocks like Arcane Signet, Bonder's Ornament and Izzet Signet which are great ways to have extra mana to keep the engine going! Viridian Longbow is another cool card that we can use an additional source of damage!

Enchantments:

Clout of the Dominus is mostly a proactive protection aura for Chakram Retriever while we sometimes we attack and may want to buff up Chakram Slinger this isn’t always the case! Whether we are trying to ruin opponents blocking or clearing the path for ourself Malicious Intent is a really strong card since we can often use it multiple times! Quicksilver Dagger is a really cool card since for only 3 mana we can do damage and get a card! Sigil of Sleep is a really cool card that can really be problematic for our opponents since we can bounce creatures from opponents boards!

Land Base:

Not a ton to talk about when it comes to our landbase, we of course have the normal Izzet duals like Molten Tributary which is a great way to get both of our colors down! We also always have to include cycling and draw lands like The Surgical Bay and Desert of the Fervent which are both really great ways to get some extra cards! The best land in our deck is Tocasia's Dig Site which can also be a really strong way to get some cards!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Easy to kill creatures / direct damage players
  • Ton of card draw
  • Can snowball damage very quickly

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate
  • Deck is noticeably weaker without commanders
  • Weak to aggressive strategies

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

There are no infinite combos or loops in the deck but we do have a bunch of creatures as well as our commanders that can help lead us to victory! Our commanders are a very powerful outlet for damage but when combined with cards like Erebor Flamesmith and Guttersnipe which is a really strong way to get some damage out of things we are already normally doing! Our main win condition is rarely through attacking although we can if needed and we focus on more controlling and damaging through our spells!

Conclusion:

Chakram Slinger and Chakram Retriever are two really fun commanders who are an absolute blast to play and just a great time overall! Out of the Battlebond partners these were a pair I was really looking forward to as they are amazing cards from their art to abilities and allow us to play a fun spellslinger style deck with a lot of cards you don’t typically see in these strategies! We are going to keep on untapping on and damaging out our opponents! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of your support!
