Giada, Font of Hope Angel Tribal

Commander Overview

Giada is one of the most popular commanders because she’s cheap and offers unrivaled value for an Angels-only themed deck.

The only issue with Angel tribal is that the converted mana cost of many of the angels is quite high, meaning we need some more expensive pieces of ramp to make the deck effective.

At the cheapest pricings available, this deck is $300, and it doesn’t include many of the white staples like Akroma’s Will or Esper Sentinel, purely focused on Angel shenanigans.

How to Play the Deck

This deck is Angel tribal, with only one non-angel (a cost reducer). The goal is to play threatening flying creatures and manipulate the board-state with stax effects. There are a handful of angels that offer potent stax effects, so leveraging them to create advantages is the plan.

Giada is both an anthem and a mana dork, and she’s fairly important in the early game. But, as you start to build a board-state, she becomes less impactful. This being said, don’t waste protection on her, since she’s easy to recast and there are bigger threats you should be protecting.

Synergy’s in the deck

Many of the angels work well together because they promote attacking. For example, Angelic Guardian and Firemane Commando together give you a worry-free attack because they become indestructible, and card draw to boot. And if you have a vigilance-enabler, that’s even better.

Phases of the Game

Early-Game: We’re looking for a hand with 2-3 lands and a cost reducer/mana rock. This ensures we get Giada on turn 2, and hopefully a 4-5 drop on turn 3-4.

Mid-Game: Ramping up with cost reducers and anthems, by the mid-game we should have some of our stax pieces out and feel comfortable swinging for damage.

Late-Game: We should be leveraging our mana to create an army with Emeria's Call or Entreat the Angels, and should be protected by an indestructible anthem or a can’t lose effect.

Card Breakdowns

Card Draw/Card Advantage

There’s not a whole lot of card draw in here, but conditional draw effects on Angelic Sell-Sword and Battle Angels of Tyr can get you some draws in the mid-to-late game.

Removal

I’m light on removal, so you can always through in some more exile/destroy effects like Swords or Path to Exile. I do include Lay Down Arms, Destroy Evil, and Disenchant as conditional removal. Mass Calcify will be a one-sided board wipe most times, as well.

I think the deck is pretty powerful in that many of our creatures are threats as soon as they hit the board. Also running a suite of cheap removal feels a bit mean, especially for bracket 2. But, if your play group doesn’t care, I’d suggest upgrading the removal package first.

Stax

Our average CMC is quite high, so we need to slow down our opponents as much as we can to keep the playing field level. Authority of the Consuls and Blind Obedience are great options early on while you’re still ramping.

Later, Angelic Arbiter, Angel of Jubilation, and Archangel of Tithes make it difficult to attack you or interact with your board. Linvala, Keeper of Silence is $22, but she’s also a great addition, locking down commanders and other high-value creatures.

If you wanted to streamline the deck a bit more and reduce the overall mana cost, you could add in Ghostly Prison as an additional stax piece.

Protection

Because angels are angels, a lot of them have protection effects built into them. Angelic Guardian and Avacyn, Angel of Hope makes our creatures indestructible, while Herald of Eternal Dawn and Platinum Angel keep us from losing the game.

If these powerful angels are not on the board, there are a few other options for protection. Angel's Grace, of course, is a must include. Brave the Elements can shut down a Toxic Deluge, Wrath of God, or other mono-colored board-wipe, and Flare of Fortitude can be a free hands off protection spell. Reprieve is for someone who dumps all their mana into a big spell, giving you one more turn.

Utility / Support

Cards like Starnheim Aspirant drastically reduce the cost of our angels, and Gathering Stone from Lorwyn: Eclipsed is a great card for any kindred deck, as it provides top-deck manipulation and a discount.

There are a lot of anthems in this deck that buff angels, including Lyra, Dawnbringer, Angel of Jubilation, and Thraben Watcher. It’s pretty easy to make your creatures indestructible, too, which is a big plus.

Angels also have a surprising amount of recursion, as well, including Emeria Shepherd, Reya Dawnbringer, and Serra Paragon.

Ramp and Mana Base

I have included much more stuff in this mana base then I usually do, simply because the deck is filled with expensive creatures.

First up, let’s discuss lands. Abandoned Air Temple can buff the team and will almost always come in untapped, same with Monumental Henge. For other utility, we have Rogue's Passage and Windbrisk Heights.

For ramp, we rely alot on artifacts, as many of the angels don’t care about lands. There are cost reducers like Herald's Horn, Oketra's Monument, and The Wind Crystal. But there are also mana rocks like Marble Diamond, Sol Ring, Patchwork Banner, and Gilded Lotus.

You’ll notice I’ve also included Land Tax, which in the early game can help you ensure you never miss a land drop, and in the late game, can help you thin out your deck. It’s $25, but I think it’s worth it here.

Special shout out to Starfield Shepard for being a 2-mana plains tutor, that card has come in clutch many a time.

Win Conditions

Despite being mono white, the game plan is very green-coded. We’re just trying to swing big creatures at our opponents. Angels all have flying and most of them have lifelink, so attacking will always net us life. Angel of Destiny provides player-removal on a stick if you meet all the prerequisites. It can be a fun challenge to get it to go off, but it’s a backup to the traditional swing for lethal plan.

Strengths of the Deck

Slowing down your opponents with stax effects.

Dominating combat with large, indestructible creatures.

Commander is not as important in the late game.

Weaknesses of the Deck

Very mana-intensive to cast big angels, often only casting 1 per turn.

Little responses to countermagic.

Politics often turn against you, since you are a stax player with big threats.

Conclusion

Giada is a well-rounded commander for angel tribal because she’s cheap, gives us a mana advantage, and buffs the team. I like how she’s not part of the main game plan, moreso a tool to getting out Avacyn and the more threatening angels.

Throwing in some game-changers like Smothering Tithe might make the deck better, but I don’t think it’d be that much better. The angel-tribal build sits nicely in the higher end of bracket 2.
