Tuesday Night Takeover

Muldrotha, the Gravetide Sacrifice Brewed EDH

I’ve been up so many days!

Art:Muldrotha, the Gravetide by Jason Rainville

Muldrotha is a really fun BUG commander that is the king of the graveyard / reanimator strategy, while Muldrotha does cost 8 we can pretty easily cast him and when he hits all eyes are going to be on you since you can reanimate a permanent of each type per turn! With this we can turbo fog, turbo counter some spells or just get some turbo value. Muldrotha is a real house of a card!

Why Muldrotha, The Gravetide?

Muldrotha is the real deal of reanimator since we can reanimate a permanent of each type during each of our turns. When combined with cards that sacrifice themselves we can very easily do that an absolute ton and generate so much value. This deck is really powerful and I would expect a lot of hate / removal coming your way once you sit down with this! The beauty of Muldrotha is that unless our opponent exile our cards they pretty much are always coming back!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck, for a full breakdown of the combos of the deck please check out the main win conditions section below!

Creatures:

Our creature package is full of some small creatures that have big effects on the gameplan. Birds of Paradise is a great early creature that can help us ramp, we are pretty light on ramp as we can afford to tempo out permanents.

Siren Stormtamer and Spore Frog are some of the best targets to recur with Muldrotha since they can very easily protect our creatures and us. Viscera Seer and Stitcher's Supplier round out are early game package as a great way to fill the graveyard and have a sac outlet!

Bloom Tender is one of our best ramp creatures since we can very easily get 2 or 3 colors of mana, especially when we have another 2 mana all-star in Baleful Strix. Orcish Bowmasters is a new card that is taking the format by storm and is just great in a ton of situations. I have been putting this card in any deck that can play it and it has been a workhorse.

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove not only can help us ramp, but is a great way to provide fixing for our 3 color mana base. Gray Merchant of Asphodel can often act as a great way to deal a ton of damage and gain a lot of life when we have the right permanents out. Polluted Dead isn’t going to make you a ton of friends but can be a great way to take out a powerful nonbasic.

Our top end curve has a bunch of commander menaces including Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Toxrill, the Corrosive, Koma, Cosmos Serpent. The top end of our curve is full of some cards that can easily take over the game on their own!

Planeswalkers:

We only have one planeswalker but they serve an important role in the deck Ashiok, Dream Render is a great card that not only prevents opponents from searching the library but we can also self mill and exile each opponents graveyards. Just an overall W of a card.

Instants:

We are a blue deck so of course we have counterspells! Now we don’t have a ton but we do have some of the staples like Counterspell and Swan Song and An Offer You Can't Refuse. All of these are just cheap and efficient ways to interact with our opponents on the stack.

Assassin's Trophy and Cyclonic Rift are the highlights of our instant interaction package and are never really bad cards there is always targets for both of these amazing spells.

Sorceries:

Our sorcery package has two sweet tutors in Diabolic Intent and Demonic Tutor both of which typically we use to grab combo pieces but we can really grab anything that we need with these. Intent is especially good in our deck since we can fill our graveyard.

Damnation and Toxic Deluge are perfect when we are behind our opponents and need to reset them to our level. Deluge has the benefit of killing indestructible and otherwise evasive creatures!

Buried Alive is a great easy way to prepare for Muldrotha or instantly get a target to reanimate once Muldrotha hits. Reanimate is a staple of reanimation decks and just a great way to get something back if we have already used Muldrothas ability already.

Artifacts:

Even though we are in BUG we don’t tend to draw a ton of cards, but of course we have an answer for that in The One Ring which is a great way to draw cards and has really been taking over the format as a premier card in pretty much every deck.

Altar of Dementia and Altar of the Brood are both great ways to not only fill our graveyard but take away some stuff from our opponents as well. Both of these are really cheap artifacts that can come down early and do work for many turns.

Enchantments:

As we talked about above we don’t draw a ton of cards and since we are in blue we of course have to have Mystic Remora and Rhystic Study which as everyone knows draw a ton of cards! Pernicious Deed is uniquely good in our deck since we can recur it nearly every one of our turns!

Dictate of Erebos can be really nasty if we can keep recurring and sacrificing our creatures which we can do very easily. The Meathook Massacre is just like our other mass destruction spells that can kill pesky creatures and indestructible creatures that works best when we are behind.

Land Base:

Our land base has a ton of nonbasics consisting mostly of BUG dual lands but we do have some special lands that are worth highlighting like Strip Mine since we can easily recur this with Muldrotha they are really sweet and repeatable.

We are a three color deck so we of course have Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth are both great ways to provide mana fixing for us.

Since we can recur lands we also have a bunch of the kamigawa channel lands like Otawara, Soaring City, Takenuma, Abandoned Mire and Boseiju, Who Endures. It is really great to be able to channel these lands and then get them back just to play them!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Reanimation can only be stopped by exile effects
  • Easy to recur fog and counter effects to continuously protect ourselves
  • Combo kills are easy to assemble, and we can end games quickly

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to graveyard hate
  • Deck is noticeably weaker without Muldrotha
  • Not a ton of interaction
