“My training is… unconventional.”

Proud Mentor and Impettous Protege are a really aggressive Boros strategy that focuses on controlling the board through tapping down creatures and swinging for the fences! We have a really fun Boros deck with a strong aggresive package as well as the ability to control the board and transition strongly to the midgame and form into more of a midrange package! This deck is an absolute blast and for the rest of the week we will be finishing up the battlebond partners in PEDH so stay tuned for that! Without further adieu lets get it!

Why Proud Mentor / Impetuous Protege?

Proud Mentor and Impetous Protege are partners so of course they interact really well with each other! Proud Mentor is a sweet creature who we can use to tap down a key attacker / blocker and this correlates directly with Impetous Protege who gets buffed up based on the creature we tapped down! These commanders are really sweet and play super well with each other!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

Aurora Champion is my favorite and arguably one of the best cards in the deck since we can always trigger it and get an additional tap! Since we mostly attack alone we can use Aven Squire as a really strong way to buff up Impetuous Protege more and have a great flying blocker! Ballynock Trapper is a really strong card that in the right turn we can use to fully tap down an opponents board! Cavalry Pegasus is a strong way to give our commanders flying! Clockwork Drawbridge is a really strong card that is basically a second copy of Proud Mentor. Ivory Giant is one of my favorite creatures since depending on the table we can tap all of an opponents creatures or sometimes the entire board!

Instants:

Big Score and Unexpected Windfall are great ways to get mana and cards! We also have some really strong single-target removal with cards like Crib Swap and Generous Gift which are both super strong removal spells and a great trade-off for us! Topple the Statue is a great way to focus on the tapdown gameplan or take out a key artifact for our opponents oh and we get a card all for three mana! After we get a good attack in, if we are worried about an attack from the creature we tapped down we can use Swift Response to get rid of it after our attack!

Sorceries:

Breath of Life is a card that I feel doesn’t get enough play and since it is in white it is a perfect albeit a little expensive way to recur a creature! Thrilling Discovery is a great way to get some more cards and gain some life all for 2 mana! Piercing Rays is a great way to exile a key creature from our opponents and its foretell ability is perfect when used with Impetuous Protege!

Artifacts:

We of course have some mana rocks like Fire Diamond and Marble Diamond as well as Arcane Signet! These are all great ways to get some extra mana and get our commanders and cards out earlier! We of course have some really strong equipment like Greatsword of Tyr, Greataxe and Armory of Iroas. Brass Knuckles is another really crazy card that allows us to give two creatures double strike! Jalum Tome is another strong way to get some extra cards!

Enchantments:

Goblin War Drums is a great way to make all of our creatures have menance which when combined with our tapdown we can control the board and make combat a nightmare for our opponent! If we have a card we want to target with our tapdown we can use Insolence is a great way to get some damage off of that! Onslaught is a strong way to control the board and let our creatures to get in there! If we have a creature that we want to keep tapping down we can use Shackles to lock them down and if needed we can get Shackles back and tap down a new threat! My personal favorite enchantment is Flaming Fist which is a great way to make Impetuous Protege an even more dangerous attacker!

Land Base:

As it is known here on TNT we love lands that we can draw off of so we had to bring The Autonomous Furnace and The Fair Basilica which are all really strong ways to turn extra mana into extra cards! Desert is a great card to help counter against aggressive decks or token strategies or can be a great way to turn combat into our favor!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Easy to win through commander damage
  • Many different ways to control the board through combat
  • Decent amount of interaction / card draw

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate
  • Weak to artifact hate
  • Same weaknesses that most Boros decks have

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We have no infinite combos or loops in the deck, we typically win the game by tapping down opponents key creatures in order to buff up Impetuous Protege and swing for the fences! We are able to use a bunch of spells and creatures within our deck to buff up and swing out!

Conclusion:

In conclusion Proud Mentor and Impetuous Protege are an absolute blast and I can’t wait to finish out the week with featuring the rest of the Battlebond Partners! Battlebond was a huge set for Pauper EDH and these cards are an absolute blast! This deck is as Boros as they come and is an absolute ton of fun to play and a great way to get aggressive! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of the support!
