Purphoros, God of the Forge Goblin Tokens Brewed EDH

The weapons I forge do not have names. They have ambitions.

Art:Purphoros, God of the Forge by Eric Deschamps

Purphoros is one of my personal favorite gods from Theros block! Being able to essentially Shock our opponents every time a creature ETB’s and buffing all of our creatures through Purphoros Second ability is a really strong card for only 4 mana! We are a goblin deck that focuses on tokens and combat and we use Purphoros and a ton of noncombat damage to whittle down our opponents and threaten them even if combat is not an option! This is a classic feared commander and is a ton of fun to play! Without further adieu lets get it!

Why Purphoros, God of the Forge?

Purphoros is a really sweet commander who is the lifeblood of our deck! Being able to damage each of our opponents on creature ETB is a really broken that can get out of hand really quickly! Being able to pay 3 mana and buff all of our creatures can be a great way to get some extra damage in! Purphoros is a key part of our deck and pretty much everytime we have 4 mana we cast Purphoros!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck! The infinite combos and loops in the deck are listed below in the “Main Win Conditions” Section.

Creatures:

Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of Bounty is a key creature for most of our combos and is also a great card passively and just to have on the field! We also have Goblin Chieftain and Goblin Warchief are two key goblins that make us much stronger in combat! We also have a bunch of cards that produce a lot of tokens the best of the best being Krenko, Mob Boss, Siege-Gang Commander and Tilonalli's Summoner which are all really strong token producers! We also have some cards that make Purphoros damage better and any of our noncombat damage sources better in Solphim, Mayhem Dominus and Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might // Temple of Power as well as Torbran, Thane of Red Fell which put a very short clock on our opponents!

Instants:

Our instant package has two strong draw spells in Big Score and Unexpected Windfall which are great spells to get more cards and some mana! Brightstone Ritual and Battle Hymn are both great cards that often produces a crazy amount of mana which is absolutely perfect for some of our X spells!

Sorceries:

My favorite sorcery in the deck is Burn at the Stake which can be a really strong way to kill an opponent with not much effort! Gamble is the closest thing that we have to a tutor, and hey its on flavor and speaks to the chaos of Mono-Red! We also have some really sweet X spells to create tokens like Firecat Blitz, Hordeling Outburst and Song of Totentanz which are all great ways to get some burst damage with Purphoros and get some attacks in! Vandalblast is a really great way to mass remove a bunch of artifacts!

Artifacts:

Cloudstone Curio is a really good way to utilize key ETB’s and retrigger Purphoros! We of course have some mana rocks like Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Throne of Eldraine! All of these are especially strong in Mono-Red since we can speed out Purphoros! Since we produce a ton of tokens, Skullclamp is an absolute auto-include in this deck and helps address one of Mono-Red’s biggest problems which is card draw! Conjurer's Closet is a strong way to re-ETB key creatures and get some more damage from Purphoros! Panharmonicon is a great way to turn Purphoros 2 damage into 4 damage which can get super out of hand super quickly!

Enchantments:

Blood Moon is particularly good in our deck since we don’t really care about our lands being mountains, while we do have some strong nonbasics we by no mean need them! Impact Tremors, Goblin Bombardment and Raid Bombardment are great ways to get some noncombat damage in and put even more of a clock on our opponents! Molten Echoes is a really strong card not only for Purphoros but for some of the key effects / etb’s that our goblins have! Shared Animosity is a really broken card if we decide to go for the combat route!

Land Base:

Cavern of Souls is a really sweet land that makes a bunch of our deck uncounterable which can be strong as we are particularly weak to blue. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is one of the most powerful mana generators in our deck often turning a 2 mana investment into 6 or 8 mana, this is one of our key lands we want out! Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance is not only a great red source but a great way to get more tokens and with Purphoros out some damage! Since we are in mono-red we can get a lot of use out of Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle as a great source of extra damage! If we go the combat route we can use Castle Embereth as another strong source of buff for all of our tokens and creatures!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Our commander is decently difficult to remove
  • Once Purphoros hits the field our opponents are on a clock
  • Easy to win in combat

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate, hard to recover after board wipes
  • Weak to exile effects especially on our commander
  • We can be slow in the early game

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

Our typical main win condition is the damage from Purphoros, God of the Forge and attacking with a bunch of goblins! But we also do have some infinite combos in the deck which are fully explained below:

  5. Repeat from step 3.

Results:

Infinite creature tokens with haste. Infinite ETB. Infinite magecraft triggers.

Dualcaster Mage + Heat Shimmer

Requires:

Both cards in hand. You control at least one creature. 3RRR available.

Steps:

  1. Cast Heat Shimmer by paying 2R.
  2. Holding priority, cast Dualcaster Mage by paying 1RR.
  3. Dualcaster Mage enters the battlefield, copying Heat Shimmer.
  4. Resolve the copied Heat Shimmer, creating a token copy of Dualcaster Mage.
  5. Repeat from step 3.

Results:

Infinite creature tokens with haste. Infinite ETB. Infinite magecraft triggers.

Conclusion:

Purphoros is an absolute menace of a commander and truthfully has been for a long time! Since goblins make so many tokens we can overwhelm the board and in the case of a lot of games we don’t even need to attack! There are a ton of ways to end the game through combat and noncombat damage! This deck is an absolute blast and perfect for a new player or any red mage! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of your support!
