Tuesday Night Takeover

Rabid Wombat Auras Pauper EDH

“I’ll sleep when I’m dead but I’m oh so tired”

Art:Rabid Wombat by Kaja Foglio

Rabid Wombat is a creature that before Pauper EDH didn’t get a lot of love. Thanks to PDH we can bring this wild animal to the command zone! Rabid Wombats ability allows us to get him really big really quickly combine that with trample and a bunch of buffs and he can very easily one shot someone! Rabid Wombat is a very straightforward Mono-Green Enchantress strategies and is a ton of fun for players who love to turn stuff sideways!

Why Rabid Wombat?

We chose Rabid Wombat is because he gets +2/+2 for each aura, while he does cost 2GG which is a little high for creatures that typically have abilities like this. We are able to snowball very quickly combine this with a bunch of enchantments that we have cost only 1 green and we can get out of hand very quickly. A secondary reason is that he is an old creature that doesn’t get much love and there is room for him in the PDH format he is quite a strong creature in the 99 and even stronger in the command zone!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck!

Creatures:

Our creature package is very small but has a big impact! Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic are a primary pieces of creature ramp and these cards are good at really any stage of the game! Aura Gnarlid and Yavimaya Enchantress and Gnarlback Rhino are the backup win conditions for the deck and they can be used if needed! Since we are a deck that has not too many creatures one of our best blocker is Taunting Elf who I typically hold until we are closer to death!

The last two creatures help a ton with card draw and introduce the monarch to the game. Entourage of Trest and Staunch Throneguard which are just great ways for us to draw cards and these are all decent blocker creatures as well!

Instants:

Since the whole goal of the deck is to buff wombat as much as we possibly can, we have a bunch of ways to make him bigger and protect him. One of the best ways to buff him is Aspect of Hydra which when combined with trample can easily be a one shot. We also have a bunch of ways to protect the wombat like Avoid Fate which is great for stopping single target removal. Snakeskin Veil and Tamiyo's Safekeeping is another great card to stop single target removal from hitting the wombat!

We dont have a lot of single target removal but we do have some including Naturalize which can be great to slow down your opponents or take away an important piece. We also have Return to Nature which is a very versatile piece of single target removal! Aerial Predation is great for those pesky flyers and we get some life off of it!

Sorceries:

One of my favorite sorceries in the deck is Miming Slime since once we have a really big wombat we can cast it and basically just get another huge creature further pressuring our opponents! We are a Mono-Green deck so we of course have to have Cultivate and Kodama's Reach to get some extra mana and get wombat out earlier! Commune with the Gods is a great card that lets us filter and more often than not grab an enchantment over a creature but still can be great to find more auras! Rofellos's Gift is a great way to rebuild our board if wombat gets killed and we need to get some stuff back!

Artifacts:

Most of our artifact package consists of Arcane Signet, Bonder's Ornament and Commander's Sphere. Not to much to say about these can be good for draw in bonders ornament and just extra mana production.

Wedding Invitation is a really cool card that allows us to make Rabid Wombat unblockable and get an easy commander damage kill.

Enchantments:

A lot of our enchantments have similar effects so we can easily group them together, the beauty of Rabid Wombat is that no matter if the enchantment is offensive or defensive we can get the +2/+2 benefit. Carapace, Fortitude and Broken Fall. All of these cards are great ways to protect Rabid Wombat and give him the buff! Crystal Carapace is unique card since it gives a buff and Ward 2 making Rabid Wombat that much harder to kill!

We have a lot of enchantments that do nothing but buff the wombat like Hardened-Scale Armor and Oakenform these cards are really easy for us to cast and make the plan to commander damage kill our opponents that much easier!

We also have a lot of enchantments with some pretty cool effects like Snake Umbra which gives us a buff, has totem armor and lets us draw cards! Cartouche of Strength is also sweet since we can fight a creature and get the buff off of it! One enchantment that keeps on giving is Predatory Hunger since we can constantly put more counters on the wombat. Forced Adaptation is a similar but slower version of this card.

Land Base:

We are mono-green so most of our deck consists of forest, but we do have some pretty interesting nonbasic lands. Cave of Temptation is a great way to put some extra counters on Rabid Wombat and get in for some more damage. Desert of the Indomitable, Tranquil Thicket and Slippery Karst are all just cycle lands that allow us to get some extra card draw which is always appreciated!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Very easy to get commander damage kills
  • Many ways to protect Rabid Wombat
  • Large ramp package

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Not a ton of alternatives for wincon besides wombat
  • Weak to enchantment hate
  • Very weak to sacrifice effects

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We do not have any infinite combos in the deck, we almost always win through combat damage with Rabid Wombat, in the instances where that is impossible we have two backups in Yavimaya Enchantress and Aura Gnarlid and Gnarlback Rhino. These three are not as good as Wombat but they can easily hold there own if they need too! Those 3 avenues to win are through those 3 creatures and in testing even against removal heavy decks I found we were able to hold strong!

Conclusions:

In conclusion Rabid Wombat is a really fun and powerful PDH deck, this deck is perfect for anyone who loves turning cards sideways and making a really big creature! This deck is fun, ramp filled and efficient. This deck is mono-green at it’s core and does a lot of things you would expect mono-green to do! I hope you enjoyed, stay tuned for more daily articles and if you like the deck or try it out! DM us about it on twitter, that is linked at the top of the page.
