Why Rose Tyler / The Thirteenth Doctor?

Rose and the thirteenth doctor play off of each other so well and are the perfect combination. Rose is our attacker and one of our huge payoffs for suspending so much. The thirteenth doctor allows us to get more counters for casting suspended spells / cards and untapping all of our buffed creatures is a super powerful effect that allows us to attack without fear of a backswing!

5 Helpful Upgrades:

Please note that these are in no particular order and are just cards that would greatly enhance the deck but were removed for budgetary reasons!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

We have a ton of cards that interact really well with +1/+1 counters like Champion of Lambholt and Arwen, Weaver of Hope which are both crazy cards for only 3 mana! Pir, Imaginative Rascal is basically our decks Doubling Season albeit a little less strong! Fathom Mage is one of the strongest draw engines in our deck and can be a strong attacker / blocker! Kami of Whispered Hopes is not only a great mana producer but basically gives us a Hardened Scales effect! Kodama of the West Tree is a combat killer in our deck since nearly all of our creatures are modified! Vega, the Watcher is a really cool card that lets us draw everytime something comes off of suspend!

We are a suspend deck so of course we have a bunch of suspend effects and creatures, while this card doesn’t suspend themselves they are still really strong. Jhoira's Timebug is perfect for our deck since we can add or remove a counter depending on the situation both of these can be really strong and all of this for only 2 mana! Time Beetle is very similar to Jhoira’s Timebug but also lets us get a little damage in! Sinister Concierge is one of our best blockers since we want to take them and one of our opponents creatures for 3 turns, people really don’t like having that happen! Ith, High Arcanist is really strong against commander damage or any sort of voltron strategies we can suspend Ith early and take him off suspend much earlier! Benalish Commander is a great creature producer even when he is on suspend and since we can add counters we can keep that going!

Planeswalkers:

We only have one planeswalker but they have a huge impact! Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter is a mana-making machine and can be a really strong piece of ramp for us! If we have a key creature we want to buff or untap we can also use his minus to put a counter on one of our creatures!

Instants:

We of course have some removal spells in the form of Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile which are really cheap and efficient removal! Inspiring Call is a sweet mass draw spell and protection spell for only 3 mana! Dust of Moments and Clockspinning are both effective ways to remove time counters from our suspended permanents! Suspend can be a decent removal spell but also because of our deck is great to use as a protection spell for us as well!

Sorceries:

We are a bant deck so ramp absolutely had to be included with cards like Cultivate and Kodama's Reach being at the forefront, but we also have Search for Tomorrow which is a really cool card that gives us the trigger benefit from each of our commanders, oh and it ramps! If we begin to fall behind we can use Supreme Verdict as an uncounterable way to catchup! Cyclical Evolution and Inspiring Refrain are both cards that really keep on giving since we can cast them every few turns and trigger both of our commanders! Inevitable Betrayal is a great card to steal a key creature or combo piece creature from our opponents!

Artifacts:

Our artifact package is exclusively mana rocks but we do have Mox Tantalite which is not only a mana rock but triggers both of our commanders! Besides that we have EDH classics like Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and every talisman that we can possibly run! These are all really strong ways for us to get all of our colors down and ramp!

Enchantments:

Cathars' Crusade is a wild card in pretty much any deck but it gets crazy in our deck even if it only has a few turns on the board and the untap from the thirteenth doctor will apply to all of our creatures. Brokers Ascendancy is a great card that has a similar effect and we will never say no to more counters! Just like with Master Chef which buffs both of our commanders and all of our creatures. We love getting counters and our enchantment package is a huge way to do that!

Land Base:

Bonders' Enclave is a really cool card that is often active and a great way to draw some cards! Gavony Township is not only a good way to buff our creatures but because of The Thirteenth Doctor activating Gavony Township even once allows us to untap all of our creatures at our end step! Besides that we have various dual lands to produce bant colors and get ready to cast all of our bant spells!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Decent amount of interaction / card draw
  • Rose Tyler can get commander damage kills pretty easily
  • The thirteenth doctor gives nearly all of our creatures almost “vigilance”

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to aggressive decks
  • Can be a little slow waiting for some of our cards to come off of suspend
  • Weak to combo / spellslinger strategies

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We have no infinite combos or loops in the deck, we win primarily through combat and buffing up our creatures. Creatures like Champion of Lambholt and Arwen, Weaver of Hope can buff up our creatures and make them more evasive which can lead to some absolutely huge game-ending swings!

Conclusion:

Rose Tyler and the thirteenth doctor are an absolute blast and just a really cool flavor win for doctor who, time-traveling and grabbing creatures and cards from everywhere! This deck has so many of elements of Bant and is a fun and interesting take on the archetype! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of the support!
