“They fear me. They should.”

Art:Selesnya Guildmage by Mark Zug

Selesnya Guildmage is the first int the guildmage Pauper EDH decks we are going to be doing over the next few weeks and wow, what a way to start! This card is the real deal being able to both create tokens and buff up all of our creatures. This lends itself really well to how our deck plays with a ton more buffs and a ton more payoffs! We are able to play a really fun deck focusing on overwhelming the board and swinging for the fences! For any token lovers this deck is for you, without further adieu lets get it!

Why Selesnya Guildmage?

Selesnya Guildmage is a really strong commander since we are able to use them as a true support role as the deck can absolutely function without them if necessary! Being able to make tokens and buff up creatures are invaluable abilities that while a little expensive are really strong and a great option to have when we need them!

Deck Overview:

This section contains information about cards in the deck and how they function within the deck! As well as highlighting some of my favorite cards in the deck!

Creatures:

Anointer Priest is a great card against aggressive strategies or really any deck, who will say no to more life! Since we want to pump our commander and our other creatures we can use mana dorks like Avacyn's Pilgrim, Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves we also have a few other pieces of creature based ramp! Carefree Swinemaster is a great card we can use to make a bunch of 2/2 tokens which are perfect attackers / blockers! Since we produce so many creatures we can get a lot of use out of convoke cards like Guardian of Vitu-Ghazi. Crusader of Odric and Scion of the Wild are both really strong “win-more” style cards that can be the final nail in the coffin if we are far ahead! One of my favorite cards in the deck is Warded Battlements which is a really cool card that makes all of our attacker just a little bit better!

Instants:

We have a bunch of instant speed token generators like Raise the Alarm, Recruit the Worthy and Sprout Swarm which can be great ways to get some extra blockers if we need to! In case of a rough combat or a mass piece of board destruction Wrap in Vigor can be a great card that leaves us with the only board! Rootborn Defenses is a great way to replicate a key token and hopefully protect our creatures or absorb some damage! Generous Gift, Return to Nature and Sundering Growth which are all great removal spells and in the case of Sundering Growth has some upside to it as well!

Sorceries:

Our sorcery package has a bunch of token producers like Battle Screech, Gather the Townsfolk and Recruitment Drive. All of these cards are great ways to fill up our board! Cultivate, Kodama's Reach and Skyshroud Claim which are great ways to get the extra mana we need to activate Selesnya Guildmage a bunch of times! We have a bunch of ways to overrun our opponents with cards like Righteous Charge and Kytheon's Tactics!

Artifacts:

Our artifact package is pretty much all mana with Pauper EDH staples like Bonder's Ornament and Arcane Signet as well as both on-color diamonds as great extra rocks as well! Campfire is a strong card against aggressive decks and can also be strong if Selesnya Guildmage keeps getting killed!

Enchantments:

We have a couple enchantments that produce tokens like Presence of Gond which is a nice and consistent way to get some tokens, we also have Omen of the Sun which is a great token producer and can be a great way to scry. Armadillo Cloak and Sigil of the Nayan Gods which are both great ways to buff up some of our mid-late game creatures and get some larger attacks in! Master Chef is one of my favorite cards and a great buff for pretty much everything!

Land Base:

Our land base is very similar to a lot of Pauper EDH land bases that we build here on the site! Full to the brim of basics but we also have cycling and draw lands like The Hunter Maze and Tranquil Thicket just to name a few! Besides that we also have Tocasia's Dig Site which is a great way to cycle through the deck and get some extra cards! Beyond that we are just focusing on producing Selesnya colors and casting as much as we can!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Easy to overwhelm the board
  • Easy to win in combat
  • An absolute ton of buffs

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate
  • Deck is weaker without commander
  • Weak to control strategies

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We have no infinite combos or loops in the deck. Our primary win condition is through combat, whether we are using buffs like Kytheon's Tactics or just using extra mana to buff up with Selesnya Guildmage we are able to overwhelm the boards with tokens and buff them up and swing for the fences!

Conclusion:

Selesnya Guildmage is a really sweet commander who is the perfect embodiment of what Selesnya does in many decks throughout Pauper EDH! Being able to overwhelm the board with tokens and buff and swing for the fences is a really fun gameplan that may not be the strongest deck in the world but is still absolutely a blast! Thanks for reading to the end and thanks for all of your support!
