Why Sigarda, Font of Blessings?

Sigarda is a really fun commander to play, not only is she well-stated and costed at 2GW for a 4/4 with flying, she also has a ton of other abilities too! One of her best is that she gives all of our other permanents hexproof, while this does make her weak to single target removal this can be a great benefit. The biggest benefit of Sigarda is that we can look at the top card of our library and cast angels or humans from the top, not only does this act as a second card draw but can be even better with cards like Sensei's Divining Top. Sigarda is a overall a well-stated creature with awesome abilities that make her absolutely perfect as a general for an angels focused deck!

Deck Overview:

Since we are a big mana deck we of course need some ways to get some mana so we start off with classic mana dorks Elvish Mystic, Llanowar Elves, Avacyn's Pilgrim and Birds of Paradise. All of these are just pretty simple dorks that can allow us to cast more of our high value permanents! One of the cool cards in this deck I want to highlight is Bishop of Wings which allows us to gain life when angels enter and get a 1/1 spirit with flying when they die, since the majority of our creatures are angels this card can give a ton of life and can be great against more aggressive decks. Archangel of Tithes is not only an angel but acts as almost a mini Ghostly Prison which while most opponents can pay that there is no real downside to applying this to a creature type we can constantly buff. Adeline, Resplendent Cathar is a controversial choice for this deck but is good especially for our buffs that apply on ETB and Adeline is a human and can take advantage of sigardas ability! We are an angel deck so we absolutely had to include Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Bruna, the Fading Light while we rarely meld into Briselda these are both powerful angels on their own! Sephara, Sky's Blade is a surprisingly easy creature to cheat out pretty early and start getting our board presence established early! Since we are an angel deck we cant forget one of the best angels ever in Avacyn, Angel of Hope this card can be very hard to beat if we resolve it!

Vivien, Champion of the Wilds is a super sweet planeswalker that can give some of our angels vigilance and reach, while the reach is not the most important for our deck that is filled to the brim with flying creatures but we will never complain about vigilance! The main reason we use Vivien is that we can cast our creatures with flash which is a great way to put out some surprise blockers or hold mana up to activate abilities or cast spells! Serra the Benevolent is a sweet planeswalker who acts almost as an anthem effect and can also make angel tokens, we typically never ult serra since if we are that low the game isn’t looking that great for us anyway. Serra is super sweet and with a big board can do an absolute ton of damage! Elspeth Resplendent is a really awesome planeswalker not only does her ult create a bunch of angels her plus allows us to buff a creature and for an ability choice we typically choose lifelink just to make us much harder to kill. Elspeths middle ability is also great to grab some of our small angels or mana dorks and cycle through the deck which can help with Sigardas ability as well!

Well we don’t have a ton of counterspells but we can always surprise an opponent with our Mana Tithe which in testing I got many opponents with this! Entreat the Angels is a great card especially if we can cast it for its miracle cost, even if we cant we can make a ton of angels and with our other buffs can get really close to ending the game! We also have common spells for selesyna decks like Cultivate, Nature's Lore and Kodama's Reach. We also have some sweet interaction in Generous Gift and Path to Exile which are both great pieces of targeted removal since we are not super heavy on single target removal it is best to save these for high value targets! Akroma's Will in a lot of situations can end games on its own especially with a big board! Since we are a deck that can play Teferi's Protection we absolutely are, just a powerhouse of a card in so many situations!

Our artifact package has a ton of cost reducers like Oketra's Monument which not only makes creatures but reduces the cost of our angels, this can be super helpful especially in the early game! Urza's Incubator is a super great card in any deck that focuses on a single creature type and that is no different in this deck. Incubator has a really big effect when it comes down and may turn your opponents attention to you! Akroma's Memorial and Vanquisher's Banner are both great cards, Akromas can really change the game when it comes down and makes games end pretty quickly. Vanquishers not only buffs our angels but also is a great source of card draw! The most interesting and arguably best artifact in our deck is Belbe's Portal which for only 5 colorless and a 3 colorless tap can put any creature into play from our hand! I used this card often and found that is quite slept in creature focused decks but can have a huge impact being able to cast a 7 or 8 mana angel early can be a real game changer! Arguably the most important artifact in our deck is Sensei's Divining Top since we can use it to manipulate the top of our library and get cards we can cast from sigardas ability. Top is the real deal in this deck and can easily help to give you a creature advanatage

Luminarch Ascension is a really game changing card if we can cast it on turn 2, since the early turns don’t involve a ton of life loss we can easily meet the requirements for this and begin pumping out angels like crazy! Court of Grace not only lets us become the monarch and gain the draw from that but we also get 4/4 angels out of the deal. Court is a really powerful card and even if we only keep the monarch for a turn or 2 can help so much! We have an absolute ton of creatures in our deck so Beastmaster Ascension is very easy to trigger and make our already big and well-stated angels even bigger! Just like the other ascensions this card is better the earlier we can play it but even in the late game we can very easily turn this on in one turn. Descendants' Path is super good in our deck since we can look at the top of our deck and with top on the field can also manipulate the top of our deck, this may not always trigger but when we do trigger it can be a huge creature / mana advantage. Cathars' Crusade even with only a few triggers of cathars can make a our creatures big threats that can attack through a lot of opponents boards that also takes into account who evasive our creatures naturally are. Defense of the Heart is sweet early and in my experience I typically just always grabbed Avacyn and there is nothing wrong with a cheated-in avacyn don’t let your opponents tell you otherwise!

Our land base consists mostly of duals that tap for GW but we also have a few lands that have cool special abilities like Gavony Township which does cost 2GW but we can never say no to a creature buff! Minas Tirith is a very easy card for us to turn on and get a draw out of it. The downside of entering tapped never really effects us since we can always just hold it till we cast sigarda, we are playing Minas solely for the drawing! Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth is just a great card for any multicolor deck that plays green since we can use that as a single piece of large scale mana fixing for our deck!

Strengths of the Deck:

  • Able to filter through deck quickly since we can cast from our library
  • Creatures in our deck are naturally evasive
  • Hexproof makes our creatures weak to single target removal

Weaknesses of the Deck:

  • Weak to creature hate
  • High CMC creatures make our gameplay slower
  • Most interaction is single target

Deck Stats:

Sample Hands:

Main Win Conditions:

We typically win by overwhelming our opponents with angels but we also have a few combos, while these combos dont end the game they can be a great way to get mana for some of our expensive angels!

Emeria Shepherd + Sakura-Tribe Elder

Result: Put all basic Plains from your library onto the battlefield.

Requires: All permanents on the battlefield.

Steps: Activate Sakura-Tribe Elder by sacrificing it, searching your library for a basic Plains and put it onto the battlefield tapped The Plains enters the battlefield, triggering Emeria Shepherd, returning Sakura-Tribe Elder from your graveyard to the battlefield Repeat

Conclusion:

In conclusion Sigarda is a super fun angel deck that is really powerful, while our top end angels allow us to end games with relative ease our lower cost angels can be a great way to mount an offensive very early! This deck is a ton of fun to play and really represents the best of Selesyna in EDH!

Thanks for reading to the end!
