Vihaan, Goldwaker EDH Deck – GREED

Commander Overview

I first started playing Magic in the OG Ixalan set. One of my favorite cards was Revel in Riches which presented a whole new way to win the game. Since then, I’ve always wanted to build a treasure-themed deck, with Revel as one of the win conditions.

Vihaan, Goldwaker is an interesting choice because he allows our stockpiled treasures to becoming creatures, creating all kinds of possibilities with cards like Port Razer.

I am running a couple of game changers in this deck, and there is an infinite combo, but I’d classify this as a high bracket 3. We don’t win early, and it’s probable that we won’t even see our combos at all.

Synergies in the deck

Almost every synergy in the deck is built around treasures or tokens in general. Being able to double up on treasure tokens, pinging for damage when tokens leave the battlefield, etc.

On synergy I like a lot is with Revel in Riches. It’s quite easy to get ten treasure tokens, especially with stuff like Smothering Tithe or Brass's Bounty, but to win with Revel in Riches you have to wait until your next upkeep. Thankfully, you can take an extra turn with Final Fortune or Warrior's Oath, letting you win on your next upkeep.

The true power play is to cast Final Fortune on your opponent’s end step. If you have enough treasures, you can just win on the spot if you’re not countered. It’s one of the best ways to win with Revel in Riches.

How to Play the Deck

This deck is pretty straight forward (minus the combo, which is detailed later), so I want to address how to pilot this deck to the fullest extent.

Tutor Targets

We have a handful of tutors, including Gamble, Enlightened Tutor, Idyllic Tutor, and Diabolic Tutor. You could obviously run better black tutors, but for this deck I wanted to situate it as high bracket 3.

In the early game, most of the tutors should be looking for treasure advantage. Smothering Tithe, Monologue Tax, Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff, or Tataru Taru are all viable targets.

In the mid-game and want to double your production, look for Anointed Procession, Xorn, or Exalted Sunborn

And in the late-game, you can use the tutors to set up the infinite combat step combo by hunting for the creatures or the Locomotive with Enlightened Tutor. Tutoring for Final Fortune can also be a viable play, since Diabolic and Gamble don’t require you to reveal the card.

Combos

There is one combo in the deck that results in infinite combat steps. It’s worth noting that while you might think Combat Celebrant is better here than Port Razer, there’s no way to give it haste when you bring it back with Technomancer, meaning it can’t attack a second time. I’ve found a few people online citing Combat Celebrant as a replacement for this combo, but it is NOT TRUE.

Prerequisites:

Infinite LTB, ETB, Treasures, Combats, Etc.

Combo Sequence
1
1. Activate Luxurious Locomotive by tapping Vihaan, Technomancer, Viscera Seer, and 4 other creatures and/or treasure tokens that are 3/3s because of Vihaan.
2
2. Declare Locomotive and Port Razer as attackers. Port Razer needs to hit someone for combat damage for this to work.
3
3. Resolve the Locomotive trigger, creating 7 treasure tokens.
4
4. Deal combat damage with Port Razer, triggering it to untap all creatures and give you an extra combat.
5
5. Hold priority and sacrifice Port Razer to Viscera Seer to scry 1.
6
6. Sacrifice 3 treasures to add and activate Ruthless Technomancer by paying and sacrificing 4 treasures to return Port Razer from your graveyard to the battlefield.
7
7. Vihaan gives your outlaws haste, so Port Razer can attack on the next combat, and can attack the same player since it’s a new version of him.
8. Repeat from step 2.
×

If you wanted to make infinite mana this way or get more attackers, you can tap more creatures to crew Luxurious Locomotive from the first activation. Since Vihaan makes your treasures creatures, the treasures created off the first activation will become 3/3s and be able to attack on subsequent combats. But, because Locomotive says “Crew 1. Activate only once per turn” you must do this on the initial swing.

Additionally, we could use Aurelia, the Warleader in this combo instead of Port Razer. She naturally has haste, which solves the Combat Celebrant problem. Plus, when we sacrifice her and bring her back with Technomancer, it’s essentially a “new” version of Aurelia, so her ability will always trigger.

Strengths of the Deck

Has no trouble with mana because treasures

Most creatures are mana positive, creating treasures when they die.

Unique win conditions that most players don’t expect

Weaknesses of the Deck

Graveyard hate or Vandalblast can set us back significantly

The combo only really works if there’s a player who cannot block

Deck Upgrades

If you want to push this deck into bracket 4, I would swap in better tutors like Vampiric, Demonic, and Imperial Seal. You could also get more card draw with Esper Sentinel or similar creatures.

Interaction could also be upgraded. Deflecting Swat, Flare of Duplication and Redirect Lightning are good additions. Orcish Bowmasters is also interaction, technically.

Conclusion

I wanted to build a deck that runs a lot of the staples of Mardu, but had a unique win condition. Revel in Riches might not always work, but as you’re slowly pinging the table with Weftstalker Ardent or Marionette Apprentice, you can be in a good spot to swing for lethal with an army of Assassin Treasures.

At the end of the day, this deck works best in a mid to high 3 environment, as it takes some time to grind out value. You won’t win in the early turns, but anywhere from 6 onward is possible.
